The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsOkay, I'm finally breaking down and creating a Facebook account.
And I know this post will probably be considered more appropriate for some other forums, but I'm most comfortable in The Lounge. So sue me.
Anyway, this weekend when I have some time, I'll be creating a new account on FB. I want to preserve at least a small modicum of privacy, so I've decided not to use my real name. Then prior to making friend requests, I'll e-mail the people in question letting them know what's coming.
Any other tips y'all might have for me to make things easier, smoother and relatively painless for me?

(8,492 posts)I've had one for about 5 years. I'm up to a whopping 85 friends. I use it to swap pics with my DIL, mostly. No one is stalking me, that I'm aware of. I have very few of the privacy settings turned on. I don't talk to strangers. I have found a few old friends. That was sorta cool. I also have several charities 'liked' so they keep me updated on things I might miss in regular news.
So, what name are you going to use?

(7,162 posts)My privacy concerns, though, are mainly due to a really overbearing governmental employer. True, I live in Cali, where there are now some laws protecting me. But this County is pretty corrupt and hostile to labor, so I Don't trust them.
In that case, keep all your privacy settings on. My son had to do the same thing. Using a false name should keep them out of your business for the most part, but better to be safe.

(2,815 posts)If I had it to do over I would use an e-mail address for Facebook that I don't use for anything else. I keep getting e-mails with the names of Facebook friends/family sent to me with virus' attached to links.
Just something to watch out for.
