BTW ~ I was able to view your post by transferring it to my 'GetSmile' tray.
This is what I saw on your reply to me. ~~~> [URL=http://s2.photobucket.com/albums/y2/Freebird1/All%20of%20everything/Bitchy/?action=view¤t=tripod.gif][IMG][/IMG][/URL]

(24,262 posts)Someone once mentioned that one can tell a hot link by the coding but I have yet to figure it out.

(72,300 posts)In the past I have used smilies and photos collected from the web only to find later on that my post is showing a big red x.
Not everything will transfer sometimes only a link to the page will work.

(12,132 posts)a hotlink is ANY image link where you just post the the link from where it's found. As opposed to you saving the image and then uploading it to your own hosting service (like photobucket, imageshack, personal website, etc...)
The issue isn't really whether or not you have hotlinked but whether or not the hosting site (Tripod in the above case) allows hotlinking. Generally, websites have to pay for bandwidth. If you link to an image on their site, every person that views it is using tripod's bandwidth. Tripod is known for not liking hotlinking. A million hits a day can add up.

Because I don't generally want to keep the picture - i just want to use it for the post. They will accept an upload from your computer (you saved or created the image and then browse to it from their interface) or you can take that link address (the one you would have posted in your thread) and paste it into their interface and they go get it and host it and then both methods give you several links to use. You want the plain direct link because DU doesn't require any bbcode or anything for posting images.
I know a lot of folks use photobucket but I personally found it to be a pain in the ass. They also limit their bandwidth so a very popular image will eventually get red-exed (unless you buy an account to get more bandwidth).
