At mine, it's pretty packed in the evenings, but not as bad in the mornings, when I'm ordinarily there, as I thought it could be. Tripping over a few guys in the locker room from time to time, but not unbearable. I bet a lot of the newbies don't last, we already lost a couple in my six am group fitness class, they were on the three week complimentary trial and decided not to continue.

(28,749 posts)But I actually do the opposite and avoid it for much of January. I consider it my month off and it seems to workout because I always miss the rush of the so called revolutionistas (LOVE the word). I really enjoy spending almost all my free time in the summer there it's hard to say no when there is this pool...
With a bar, and a grill place (defeats the purpose of the workout I know).
I didn't come up with the phrase, I saw someone else use it here a couple of weeks ago and thought it was witty.
Nice set up. I haven't seen the outside pool at my gym, being winter coupled with the fact that I don't swim at all. The indoor pools are pretty nice, they have an actual Olympic type pool, plus a "family pool" for fooling around, waterslide, etc.In fact, I'm pretty afraid of the water. When I was 6, my idiot ex-brother in law thought it would be funny to throw me off the end of a dock into the lake. His theory was it was a sudden introduction to swimming. Actually, it was a quick course on how to drown. I came pretty close before he hauled me out.
BUT, that is one of my oh-so-many goals. By the end of the summer, I want to have taken swimming lessons and gotten over my fear. Next fall, I'm taking the "boot camp" course. Swear to God I'll make it that far by then.

(28,749 posts)She does it in VT so they really do kind of just move boulders around, run through the woods, and cross treacherous streams...
Those VT'ers are a bit looney if you ask me, they do this:

(16,245 posts)Well, I haven't kept my resolution to go more often.
The first days or so after the new year, it was very crowded at 6 pm when I'm usually there. I noticed a lot of people had brand-new shoes too.
I think it's dropped off a little, but since I haven't been good at keeping my resolution, I can't really tell.

(4,056 posts)Luckily, I live where I live, so biking and running in 50 to 60 degree weather hasn't been a hardship. But it's supposed to rain next week, which seems like the right time for Gym re-entry. All the Resolutionaries should be gone by then!

(2,135 posts)I'm slowly working at cutting down my calories and I've begun walking. Yesterday, I managed to walk 1.2 miles. I know it isn't much, but it really is for me.

Added another tenth this morning, along with my MP3 player. Listening to pro wrestler William Regal speak about his career while walking = Awesome.

(4,243 posts)The crowd is thinning way down. Mostly just us regulars now. How ya doing Denninmi? Still running?

(6,581 posts)Not giving up on it, though, since in a couple of months it's on the official training agenda my PT has come up with. 22 year old college football player just graduated last spring, 6'4", 100 lbs on me, pure muscle and built like an ox. I have no choice in the matter, if I don't do it he'll twist me like a pretzel.

(4,243 posts)Just do what you can for now and you'll be doing 5k's, 10k's, half marathons, and marathons before you know it!
I posted this last night in a thread about George Jones. The Race Is On! It'll be you in no time!

(6,581 posts)Yeah, I'll get there, it may take time. I don't quit.

(32,074 posts)Not as bad as it has been in the past, thanks to a new gym in town, and a new YMCA. But, still plenty of 'em around to make things unpleasant. Spinning hasn't been bad, but they're still crapping up everything else. Zumba class is the worst. (OMG, don't even get me started...) They tend to stick around much longer there. With spinning, it doesn't matter what time of year it is. 9 out of 10 don't come back for a second class--that is if they last more than 15 minutes in the first one. They actually have to work in there. Can't fake it, or go through the motions as easily as you can with other group fitness classes. They have also been making life difficult around the weight machines and free weights. And, parking is still a nightmare.

(15,333 posts)I like my gym very much, save for the narrowness of the track-and therein lies the problem.
I call them the "cloggers". They come in two sorts 1) the ones that walk slowly SIDE BY SIDE in the middle
of the track, yakking away, and 2) the ones that come to a dead halt right in the middle of the track
in order to stretch or have one of those oh-so-very-important conversations...

(6,581 posts)It's got just about everything else you could think of and want, but no running track. Isn't a track kind of a really basic feature of any gym of any size?

(6,581 posts)I just wish I could do it at the pace some of the guys do. I can do like 5.5, maybe 6 if I push it. I was watching a couple of guys, obviously buddies, running side by side and doing like 8.0 for like 30 minutes. I'm so envious, I don't know if I can ever get to that level, but I'm going to try.

(32,074 posts)She'll go for an hour. I think she puts in six or seven miles a day. I'm somewhat envious, too. But, I HATE running. I am not built to be a runner, party because I am over-endowed in the chest area. I tried it for a while, but got tired of having my sports bra rubbing way my flesh. My hips were always unhappy, too. I get my best aerobic workouts from spinning now. Much easier on the joints and other things. Spinning will definitely get you shape. It's comparable to running as far as burning calories goes, too.

(32,074 posts)It doesn't matter how much space there is in Zumba, or step aerobics, or any other aerobics class I take. Without fail, some idiot will inevitably walk right up and stand two feet away from me. Half the room could be empty, and they still will stand right on top of me. And, it's almost always someone who doesn't know what the hell they're doing, or someone who doesn't want to exert themselves very much. Everyone is moving back and forth, and they just stand there with their jaws hanging. Or, they're more fixated on staying in a line than letting you have space. I move up to give myself more room, so they move up so that everyone is in a line, as if that is so bloody important. It's maddening. I am a magnet for these types.
Your track experiences also remind me of the grocery store. Same shit there, too. People will stop in the middle of the aisles to chat, or they'll be yakking on their damn cell phones, oblivious to everyone and everything around them.

(11,791 posts)but it usually is. There have been some new folks in to try it out, and it's hard to say if they'll be back. The first time I Crossfitted I was so sore I couldn't go back for a week. So, some of them may be back in, but for your average resolutionista, Crossfit is probably a bit much.

(50,566 posts)Before sickness, it seemed like it depended on the time of day. At certain times it was much like before, but at others it was much more crowded (like early afternoon).
But, hey, I'm rooting for anyone who decides to move their body more. Everybody needs exercise -- more power to the resolvers, as we call 'em.
