... who left them with me to finish her Master's Degree in Ireland failed to
come back for them, were as different as two cats could be but for good
reasons.
.
BlackCat was VERY old and VERY frail and was a sweetheart cuddlebunny
lapsnuggler -- I always figured in part because I was her giant heating pad
that would conform to her whole aching body.
.
GrayCat had been abused. I heard one of the roommates where she lived
laughing about blowing potsmoke in her face and intentionally freaking her
out, the asshole. Who knows what else he did?
.
GrayCat didn't bolt if you came near, but would permanently STIFFEN if
picked up and would calmly get up and walk away if you tried to pet or
scratch her. She would NOT stay in a lap for two seconds if placed there.
.
I took it very slow with her. Every once in a while, I could get close enough
to pet her -- starting VERY lightly... pretty much imperceptibly and slowly
applying more and more pressure, like frogs in a gently hotter cookpot.
She would react well to it until she realized that someone was petting her.
Within 5 seconds or so from the start, she would get up and move away.
.
One day, after about two years of coaxing her to trust me, I was watching
TV on the couch and she walked over and lay down along my leg, leaning
on it.
.
It was a HUGE moment... ENORMOUS!!!
.
She never did get beyond that, though -- wouldn't be scratched or
stroked, wouldn't sit in my lap -- but we'd sometimes sit linked like that
for hours. And I never failed to recognize what an enormous amount of
trust it took for her to do what she was doing.
.
I talked to her a lot during those times, though she never answered.

She really likes being scratched on the head, but that's about it. We have a male cat named Dylan that is just over a year old and he loves being petted all over. Every morning when I get up he meets me at the bedroom door for his morning rub down. He's really a loving little guy. Tobi hates him.

Tobi was taken in by Jen and got her name before Jen found me and took me in. It gets a little confusing with two Tobys in the house sometimes.
