OW! My butt hurts.

Right under my coccyx (sp?). I just sat down in my chair after riding my new stationary bike for the third time. 12 minutes at about 10 mph, plus 2 minutes cool down.

Advice to a novice (and obese & determined) stationary bike rider?

Thank you for listening.

It used to make my butt hurt too when I first started taking spin classes but after awhile I guess I just got used to it or maybe I'm tougher now.

I guess my best advice is to hang in there it will get better and as full disclosure, when my back was killing me after belly dancing class this past Sunday I sat on the couch with a cup of hot tea and a pillow behind me.

Feel better.

based on a series of conversations with a friend several years ago -

bicycle seats are pretty tough on those who are already very fit.

And, the ones that are easier on one's nether regions are, or were at the time, gender specific. As in they have cut-outs, holes in the seat, to relieve pressure on areas that shouldn't have that much pressure put upon them for any length of time. So they were, supposedly, easier on one's sensitive areas, both fore and aft.

So, as weird as this sounds, look to your seat. And get some advice from someone who understands this stuff _and_ knows bike seats.

I can barely make it 12 minutes. I started out on my first ride aiming for 20 minutes. When I hit 10 I was dying, but I forced myself to go to 12. I think on Sunday's right I'll shoot for 15.

Determination does rock. I don't know where it's coming from, though.

The seat isn't a standard bike seat. You can't substitute another bike seat because the mounting is not the same. We actually bought a $30 bike seat that's almost as big as a park bench, thinking we could use it on there. No go. So I'm stuck with something which is very painful to ride. My completely fucked knees don't help, either. But I guess I'm better off with bad knees at <300 pounds than I would be if I were still >500.

Try getting a gel cover, and stick with it. It will begin to hurt a little less over time.
