Go to work tomorrow or call in sick?

Well, looks like we might be getting some nasty weather tomorrow - freezing rain. I have a long commute of over 45 minutes...

Now here's the problem. The forecast says that there's a 40% chance of precipitation around noon and it keeps going up.

Do you see a point in even going in? I'm contract so if I don't go in, I don't get paid which sucks - but I think it would suck even more slipping and sliding on the highway making the commute back, risking an accident. And by the time I usually leave work (~6), there's almost definitely going to be precipitation (80%+), which means being stuck in the town I work in - meaning possibly having to get a hotel room out there...

Hmmmm.....

They'll think it's the weather (and that it's Friday), anyway.

I'm a chicken, so I'd avoid those dangerous roads, if it were me. But that's me. I have a small car and not much experience on icy roads. So I'd probably stay home...unless it's going to be worse on Monday. I figure that no job is worth risking my life. If you really do think it'll be that dangerous.

I tend to agree that no job is worth risking your life for. But tell the truth if you decide not to go in--that the weather is expected to make the roads hazardous.

Your boss will understand if you tell him the truth.

Since he isn't paying you for your time off sounds like a win-win for him.

A day's pay isn't worth much after deducting a hotel stay plus meals.
You don't want to risk getting into a wreck. Big bucks go buh-bye on repairs.

And I doubt that your boss would be too happy about replacing you, even for a short time, if something did go wrong during your commute.

just sayin'

Sleet and ice, and if I call in sick it will be regarded as what we humorously call "inconjunctionitis" as it borders days off and looks suspicious, all the more so since the attendance policy was made sharply more draconian: They really don't make any distinction anymore between the habitual sick time abuser and occasional legit user.

I'm going to go for it: I'll proceed cautiously, but if I run into what seems to be dangerous conditions, I'm going back home, come what may. If I make it, which I likely will, all the chance I take is getting home: A much stronger motivation, as every inch I travel gets me that much closer to refuge. I figure if you make an effort, they may not use the hammer and tongs when recriminations occur.

Bad weather really stresses me out: I'm stressed out now from worrying, and will be till I get home tomorrow night. If I hear someone say "let it snow, let it snow, let it snow" cheerfully, I'm going to pop them one upside the head.

Call and tell your whomever "lord and master" for the day might be... that you are erring on the side of caution. Have a nice weekend.

I'd stay home if it was at all possible, as long as it doesn't put your job in jeopardy. Stay safe!
