(18,421 posts)Last year, a former town-skipping housemate of mine left his cat in our house when he lost his job. I adopted her and lo and behold she had not been fixed as he had claimed she had. (He also stiffed us for $95 in electric bill money.) She had five very cute kittens and I was able to provide some adorableness to four lucky people. (I kept the fifth.) Of course they were all spayed or neutered then by me and their new owners (which was the terms of the deal).
Here's the kitten I kept... I think if you know me, it's fairly obvious why...
And the bunch...

(3,502 posts)It wasn't always out of conviction. Actually, I don't really remember if it was or not, but it was never necessary. There were always dogs and cats looking for homes whenever we had an opening. Our present kitteh and the one before were both abandoned right near our house. We didn't even have to get in the car to adopt them. There have been times when we wanted a particular breed of dog. Wanted a lab for my daughter when our first lab died. Got one through the humane society. Recently we wanted a Shar Pei, because they suited us at this time of life. They're pretty much naturally housebroken and not inclined to try to get out of the fenced yard. We are too old to chase our dogs all over the neighborhood. We ended up with two purebred rescues and there were lots more available than that. In between were some wonderful mixed breeds. So, yeah, adopting makes a lot of sense for most people.
