Any poodle people here?

What kind of temperment do the various poodles (standard, miniature, etc) have?

Do they get along with other dogs? cats? kids?

Do they need to be professionally trimmed, or can you keep them comfortable and clean with clippers?

best disposition of any dog I've ever known. He doesn't yap, doesn't nip or bite or growl, and is playful but easygoing. He gets along wonderfully well with other animals, and feral cats come to visit him at his fence. He loves to be cuddled and kissed. He never whines, or behaves in ways we wish he wouldn't. He has no bad habits.

He was a foundling. So glad he found us that cold winter day a few years ago. No one claimed him, so we did. He's a treasure. We think he's between 5-7 years old.

and they're tough to treat. She's on steroids which helps but we can't keep her on them forever.

She's a diva in the truest sense of the word, but she's also our only pet so she's gotten a lot of help in that area.

My guess is that they'd get along with other pets and kids as well. I don't see why not.

And, yeah, we get her groomed. We tried doing it ourselves, but it just didn't work that well.

As you can see (he's that dark mass of fur leaning on me) I adored him.-

He fought occasionally if a male dog surprised him, once on the front door step and my brother flung the doormat at the dogs to break it up. He usually got along with other dogs if outside of his territory.

He sometimes tried to hump legs, funny but kind of embarrassing to me and my friends when I was ~8! Other than that he seemed fine being around my three older brothers, me, and our friends.

We never had a cat, but I think if cats and dogs are introduced properly, or at a young age, they can be friends.

We had a local groomer trim him about once a year, but also had clippers and my mom and dad gave him an all-over puppy cut once in a while. Probably using clippers a little bit, more frequently, esp. around the muzzle, would ensure they'd get used to it.

He died when he was 13... 1966. I was in high school and babysat a lot, and one of the families asked me to keep their Afghan hound for a year while the parents were at grad school in Scotland. My aunt and her little Puli dog lived with us for a while, too.

After the Afghan hound's family came back I saw an ad for standard poodle pups, $75.00- a couple's poodle, Susie, had eight pups. My mom, aunt and I went to their house in a nearby city to pick one out, without telling my dad. He loved the our first poodle but wouldn't commit to getting another yet.

So... here's Mimi-

She was a wonderful dog- a real character. Intelligent, friendly, not nervous.
When Mimi was ~ 2-3 years old I had moved and adopted a stray cat. Then I moved across the country and the cat stayed with my parents for a while. They told me Mimi and my cat pretty much ignored each other.

The only health concern I can think of common to poodles and other dogs that don't shed, is that hair grows in their ears and has to be plucked or they can get stinky, and even infected.

My boyfriend called Mimi "The Baboon Queen"-

He will be eleven on Friday
He has always been protective, will bark like crazy at anyone approaching the house, but is not hostile if the door is opened and the person is greeted or let in the house
Thinks every repairman is here specifically to play with him
He doesn't have regular contact with kids or other dogs but has been ok with those he has
He did snap at a stranger who tried to get in the back seat with him
She was a co-worker at a new job and turned out to be a real bitch, maybe he knew something
Knows it's dinner time when he hears the closing music to NBC Nightly News
Usually goes crazy over any hint that mommy or daddy are planning to make the car go, but knows what mommy going to work and be a good boy means and knows what Saturday means (parents trip to grocery, doggy home alone)
If we need to leave together on another day and can't take him with us we just tell him it's Saturday and he calms down
Likes to go to Home Depot and they don't seem to mind
He goes to the groomer about every 10 weeks or so, located at our vet's office

basically the next size up from Pomeranian. He is a rescue dog - his first owners were told he was a chihuahua/Pom cross and fed him accordingly. He doubled his weight in 2 months once rescued! He weighs in at about 30 pounds now.

He is really a cutie and in love with my husband!

they have such an assortment of facial expressions. We used to have a big old spitz that would hunker down, wait until a bunch of chickens gathered around her food bowl, then run out barking. The chickens would scatter in a oanic and she would just sit there laughing!

Obviously Mr. Blair did not think that was very nice. Bush OTOH probably thought it was funny.
