I had an avatar uploaded but I wanted to change to this image:
Every time I try to upload it I get a page with these error messages:
Warning: move_uploaded_file(/home/httpd/html/user_avatars/214838.jpg) [function.move-uploaded-file]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/httpd/html/src/profile.php on line 233
Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: Unable to move '/tmp/phpORDa1p' to '/home/httpd/html/user_avatars/214838.jpg' in /home/httpd/html/src/profile.php on line 233
If this page does not refresh, please click here.
I changed to no avatar thinking I needed to clear my old one before I could upload a new one, but that made no difference.
Help!

(12,132 posts)And if not, are there size and dimension requirements for them? I never had one so I don't know the rules on that.
edit add, I see you do have a star - I thought you did but when I was replying it shows you without one - that may just be a feature of the reply page.

(34,136 posts)I should have a star - I signed up to give DU $5 a month when we switched to the new site. But it doesn't show for me most of the time today?
I got it uploaded, but the new avatar may not be showing up yet. If you see a weird bird, it's not working. I have a cute donkey picture from 35 years ago that I want to use.

(12,132 posts)a kiwi? Definitely not a donkey...

(34,136 posts)When we saw that bird at the Merritt Island National Refuge we thought it was a bittern. But once I looked at the photos I realized it had red eyes, which means it was probably an immature black crowned night hawk - which was weird because where we saw it is not the best habitat for night hawks and it was the middle of the day.
Maybe my donkey will show up eventually, though the first version was squashed. I made the height 48 pixels, but it was narrow and the software here made it 48 pixels square. I re-edited it and added 'wings" to make it square so maybe that version will eventually show up. The donkey was in Death Valley when we drove through on our honeymoon in 1978.

(34,136 posts)I made my donkey 48 pixels tall, but he wasn't 48 pixels wide. The software stretched the image so he's fatter than he should be. I edited a new version and added white "wings" to make it 48 pixels x 48 pixels. I hope it will eventually show up. Now I've got the fat donkey and he's just not right.

(34,136 posts)I got the picture uploaded but sometimes the old strange bird is showing up (probably an immature black crowned nighthawk). And my first effort, which was not 48 pixels square came out squashed so I re-edited and tried to upload the new version but sometimes the squashed version is still showing up. Maybe I need to re-name the edited version and try to upload it again.

(34,136 posts)I suspect it takes a little while for the change to propagate through the web page.
I hope so - the squashed donkey is just not right.

(53,661 posts)Give it a little time, especially now that Elad is on the case. If anyone can make it work, he can.

(34,136 posts)For me at least.

(34,136 posts)I use Photoshop's "save for web" to reduce the kb size even more than cutting the size of the image down that small does. Mine is 2-4 kb. Your 20 kb one was too big.
The main thing I figured out is that if the image is not square, you need to put some white space on the side or top to make it square. Otherwise the forum software will stretch the image to make it square, which distorts it.

(53,661 posts)I don't think it will be meaningful at that size, tho.

(34,136 posts)I've been on some forums where the avatars can be 120 pixels square and you can have much more elaborate images. Here, the simpler, the better.

(34,136 posts)On My Profile page the avatar image didn't change. Let's see if the new avatar shows up with this message.
YEAH! Now I have to re-edit it - the original was a tall image and I just made the largest dimension 48 pixels. The software here automatically makes it 48 pixels square, which is just not right. Back to Photoshop. BRB.
Wait - in Preview mode, the new avatar showed up. When I posted the message, the old avatar was in its place.

(34,136 posts)There should be a warning that the uploaded images should be square. My donkey was tall and thin. I resized him to 48 pixels tall then the forum software made him 48 pixels square - he looked squashed.
I re-edited him and added white "wings" to make him 48 pixels square. With the same file name the new version didn't seem to upload at all. So I renamed him and tried again.
Now the final edit is showing on My Profile page. So far on my posts either my old bird avatar is still showing or the squashed donkey. Hopefully the correct version will propagate through DU as time goes by.
Thanks!
test
The corrected image shows up on Preview.
ETA - not on the actual posted message.
ETA - NOW I see the new image!

(34,136 posts)I was about to reply that I see the old image all through the thread and when I look at your profile, but when the post a reply page opened there was the burro! lets see if it sticks for me (my western US location may have something to do with it)
edit - as of 5:09 pm mountain time, the thread view still shows the old bird avatar for me. but the donkey showed when I opened the reply page.

(34,136 posts)Now I see the correct image all the way through this thread! He's such a cute burro - though he's sure to be long dead since that was taken in 1978.
