the apples didnt smell like cat piss though- smelled like green apples. Maybe her tree has some sort of disease?

The hawthorn and crab apple are within the same family, and the hawthorn when in bloom has a disagreable fishy ordor.

I would suggest that maybe it was the fruit fermenting, however this cannot be the case if the tree is in bloom.

Are there evergreen or boxwoods nearby? These are known to give off pungent urine/ammonia-like smells to them...
