When he returned from a two-year Peace Corps gig (I THINK it had been in Africa), he applied
for a stopgap job as a salesclerk at a PHENOMENAL independent bookstore in our area. The
application process included a 12-pg or so test to evaluate his knowledge of fiction.
.
The job would have paid about $5 an hour (about the same as a fastfood worker at the time).
.
He failed the test and didn't get the job.
.
The reason? His complete lack of knowledge of contemporary fiction of the previous two years.
