I found this pic via facebook at Real Men are Kind to Animals

Our tripawd rescue, Ellie, on her first night home after the 1st of two TTA surgeries. My husband, Duncan, slept in the pen with her to keep her company, and keep an eye on her.

That reminds me of when I brought my puppy home from the vet after she got spayed. I laid her in her doggy bed and slept beside her through the night. Every couple of hours I put her water dish by her face in case she was thirsty so she wouldn't have to get up. In the morning I carried her outside to go potty. I had tears in my eyes for a couple of days after I brought her home because I was afraid she was in pain.

Our first week of dating I was housesitting for my boss whose dog had gotten sick. When I picked him up from the vet, my future husband (unbeknownst to me at the time, of course) offered to stay at the house with me--sleep on the couch in the living room with the dog--so that we wouldn't have to put his cone back on. I think I fell in love there and then, if I hadn't already.

The kicker...he was (is) allergic to dogs. He spent the evening sniffling and sneezing, but taking care of that poor dog.

We've been married almost 22 years and I've watched him make the same kind of gesture towards animals and people countless times, always thinking of others more than himself. I can't say it enough times:

I. Love. My. Husband.
