Wonder why?

(2,173 posts)It might have been because they were a football team, but still.

I always loved the local sports headline: Lady Huskies subdue Ducks.

(3,502 posts)Not as cute as Ducklings, but our minor league baseball team is the Long Island Ducks. Very popular franchise it is, too. It was named after a long gone hockey team that played here long before the Islanders came along.

(43,081 posts)Probably the most infamous example of cross promotion by ownership; the team was originally owned by the Disney Corp. and was named after the 1992 cliched youth sports movie "The Mighty Ducks", starring Emilio Estevez.
Their arena is still called "The Pond."

(4,851 posts)There certainly are a ton of animals that would never be considered tough. I think the reason there are no "Kittens," "Puppies" or "Ducklings" is because those names are all for the young or "infant" offspring of adult animals for which there are lots of mascots. One of the most popular sports mascots is the Oregon Duck, who under an agreement with Oregon and Disney, looks exactly like Donald Duck. They have a sports program for kids where the kids are called Duckies, but not Ducklings. There are dozens of dog mascots, but they all feature adult dogs. The Muckdogs from Batavia NY are my favorite name only because I have no idea what a muckdog is. Likewise with cats, lots of cat names out there, but none for baby cats. I suspect there are kids programs out there with all of these names, but not at the college or professional level.
Mascots were once about having fun with the fans at the games, just like cheerleaders once actually led cheers. Now Mascots are another source of revenue for sports programs, just like the cheerleader calendars.

(31,089 posts)THen again, there are some--"Patriots," that aren't particularly ferocious.

(4,851 posts)While some, like Bears and Bengals in the NFL, are certainly scary animals, but Cowboys, Patriots and 49ers are not scary but have local history to them. In college, there are so many teams that they are really all over the map.
My favorite was when the New Orleans Jazz moved to Utah and kept the name. Certainly the relationship between Jazz and the Big Easy is clear, but can you imagine any connection between the morman founded Utah (and its center in Salt Lake) and Jazz. I find that one funny.

The Chinook Sugarbeeters have racked up more than 2 million votes in a
nation-wide mascot competition sponsored by USA Today.
The Sugarbeeters made it past the first round consisting of 255 high schools
nation-wide. Now they're vying to be Region 5 champs.
The regional competition was extended, according to the USA Today High School Sports,
due to mass amounts of voters slowing the site down.
Regional voting resumed on Monday, March 18, at 1 p.m. and will end on
Wednesday, March 20, at 1 p.m.
