The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI just cut 8 inches off my hair. Took me two minutes and three cuts. I do it all the time.
Looks great if I do say so myself. Here is how to do it for those of you (MFM) who have long hair:
1) Part hair down the middle from your forehead to your nape. Brush hair to each side like you are about to make pigtails.
2) Brush hair forward, one side then the other, so it is flat against your clavicle.
3) Cut each side in a straight line at clavicle level.
4) The hair coming from the back of your head had to go further to get to your clavicle so it is a little bit longer...which is nice.
5) Brush your hair at the back, your tail, together and trim a tiny bit till it is a straight line and the tail ends meet.
6) Your hair is now bobbed. You just saved yourself $45 ($12 if you are male).
I've done this for years. Of course my hair is curly so I don't have to be exacting with it.

(8,462 posts)I did ok. Next time should I use a bowl, so hard to get a natural looking cut, me being a computer guy.

(118,577 posts)and I thought yeah....they are probably right. My hair gets thin and ratty the longer it gets.

(7,515 posts)right now it is almost down to the small of my back...too long...I wear it up all of the time and it's becoming difficult to secure...so tomorrow, the scissors!

Actually, I sometimes get my hair cut by student barbers who volunteer when we have our quarterly outreach to homeless vets. As a volunteer there, I get to have my hair cut. But sometimes I skip it--which means I have to cut my own hair for SIX MONTHS. YIKES!

(37,648 posts)if one side is 1/4 inch shorter than the other (this happens a lot)....and I get mine cut by a hairdresser. But it's stick straight and must be precision cut.
I don't like a lot of change with my appearance. I learned that the hard way, with awful hair cuts and perms.

(2,173 posts)I don't shave or trim my hair anymore. My wife likes both long. I WISH I had hair like MFM, but I'm only just starting to go silver (not gray). My wife has long hair and I love it that way. She's so pretty. Two of my daughters have kept their hair long but my youngest went with a crop. That's sort of sad since she had the longest hair of all three - down to her butt.
I'm at a point where I really don't understand the purpose of hair cuts. It's messing with nature in an unnatural way. But shit, if you can cut off 8" all the time you could let it grow out down to your ankles in a year. That would be cool.
On another note, when I was getting ready to go for an interview (14 years ago), I shaved my beard. One of our cats watched. He gave me the evil eye. After I had finished, he wouldn't even LOOK at me for three days. I completely offended him by taking off my fur. Eventually he forgave me, but GEEZE!

(38,309 posts)... as the top of my head got balder.
Now I just buzz cut everything on my head and face and neck.
Bzzzzzzzz.........
Other body hair has good manners enough to fall out before it becomes a nuisance.
