(25,771 posts)for locating good used pallets. I plan to initiate a pallet finding road trip this afternoon.
When I used to work at Ace Hardware, they used permanent pallets made of composite material.

(34,135 posts)They often have them for free. If they have people that pick up the pallets to take back to a port or where ever, ask for their contact info.
A friend created a job for himself - he'd pick up the pallets from the stores, haul them to the port at Jacksonville and sell them back to the shippers. But the shippers only wanted standard sizes of pallets so he'd end up with odd sizes. I got those pallets from him for free to use to stack hay bales on. We had a loft 100 feet long by 12 feet wide that we'd fill with hay every year and needed pallets to cover the entire floor.
If you want standard sizes for some of the projects in the OP, offer to pay what the ports pay - it isn't much.

Riders and mid-sized mowers are shipped on crates that the dealer must dispose of after un-packing and assembling.
Did you know that the heavy 'runner' boards of most pallets are usually of Teak wood which run through a planer makes for beautiful pieces of wood art?

(34,135 posts)One of the local Japanese motorcycle shops was throwing away the teak shipping crates. We collected a bunch of them and had display cases made for our shop. We left the wood unplanned because it matched the style of the shop.
