Found them near the meter...125A..turned them off

came back inside, flipped off all the circuit breakers, pulled off the panel, pulled out dodgy circuit breaker, replaced and re-wired it with the new one..

Went back outside, flipped main switches back on, then flipped back on all circuit breakers...NADA...No Dice..still nothing

so too bad, I thought it would be this simple, I will have to call an professional now, I have done as much sleuthing as I can with this.. I'm resigned to being a helpless female...

Please check your panel first. If it is a Federal Pacific , leave it for a Licensed electrician!
You might also call your power company and complain that you " seem to have no power in half your house! " They will check for free..........
luck and health

Sounds like fine work, and you can now inform whomever what the problem is NOT!

with electrical wiring in a circuit breaker.

But it was worth a try, and you have increased your knowledge & skills, which will come in handy in the future!

It's not a female thing - there are plenty of men who don't know how to fix electrical problems. Some of them even bill themselves as electricians.

I'll rewire a lamp or a switch, but I don't mess with the big box at all. And this new house is really complicated - 400 amp service to the outside, a 200 amp box on the inside, all the big stuff goes straight to the outside box. No way I'm getting inside of either box!

I just got back in from planting stuff in my flower beds. Kept getting overheated working in the full sun in mid 80s! I bet it's gonna be a really hot summer this year. I still have two flats to get in the ground, but I'm waiting until tomorrow.

Either I have rats in the walls eating the wires

or I was abducted by space aliens last night, which is why only the wiring in my bedroom is messed, and then he made some smart alec remark about it being too hot in there for him...

and he wonders why I ignore him...

Crawling into the controls for the heat pump or the well pump.

I thought about suggesting that, but decided not to.

One source I read said that CFLs when they burn out can fry a fixture. It happened to a little lamp we own - when the CFL in it went out, it shorted the contacts in the socket. It didn't trip the circuit, but it did fry two replacement bulbs before we figured out that the socket was the problem. I still need to rewire that lamp...

If you have any of the incandescent light bulb replacement fluorescents, check them first, especially if one may have burnt out recently.
