I have just bought a new TV (smart TV) so I can access Netflix, hulu, etc. via wi fi. I am in the process of figuring out what blue ray player to buy. Should the blue ray also be wi fi capable or is that just a redundancy?

(26,549 posts)There might be some difference in what the two devices can do over WiFi from your own files.
But if they're both just for playing Netflix, Hulu and similar services then it would be redundant.

(20,886 posts)But, as I understand it, having read reviews, the smart TVs don't have much memory. So if you want to stream, you might be better off running it through the blu-ray or DVD, or Roku, or Apple TV.

(2,068 posts)Players these days have the ability to update their firmware to correct issues or sometimes add features. WiFi makes it easier to accomplish this, but that value is not worth much if you also do not need the other services it provides.

(37,648 posts)For when the features on the tv don't work properly anymore? Or in case it's faster or has a stronger signal? Unless it's a lot more expensive to get the player w/wifi.
Just wondering, though...if you won't be streaming (isn't that what Netflix & hulu are all about?), why get a smart tv? Did you mean you won't be streaming thru the blue ray?

(12,132 posts)streaming is what a SmartTV is for. It connects to the home network (either by wifi or an ethernet cable) and streams from your Netflix or Hulu (or other things) account.
I could also stream netflix through my PS3 or my Xbox but it is much easier from the TV.
He could be using the Netflix mail-order disc service but then he wouldn't even need a smartTV. Just a hi-def tv and a good Blu-Ray player.
although it's been a while since I've been shopping - you may not even be able to get a hi-def TV that isn't smart lol.

(37,648 posts)I don't stream, don't have HD, don't have a blu ray. I just want a plain ol' tv. Less to go wrong with it. Then if I want to stream later, I'll get a Roku or something.
Why is streaming thru the blu ray more hassle than thru the tv?

(12,132 posts)and one more remote to deal with. My TV remote is right here and I can just hit the button and go straight to netflix on the TV.

(4,033 posts)definition of streaming. was thinking of streaming of photos, videos from my computer, when I replied. That's why I post, so I can figure out what the hell I'm doing.
OriginalGeek
(12,132 posts)and the good news is even if you don't want to do that now, if you change your mind you should be able to do it with ease. When my computers are on they become a choice on my TV when I go to pick a source.

(12,723 posts)So an internet connection would be helpful.
Otherwise you MAY find some newer Blu Rays will not play in your player.
