It was a few minutes before 4:30 a.m. when the call came in: a suspicious passenger was aboard a Manhattan-bound subway train. Other riders were alarmed. The suspect was said to be making furtive movements.
And there was something else: this suspect had a tail.
Last Friday yes, it happened to be the 13th the straphangers on a late-night D train were startled to discover that a nonhuman creature was in their midst. An opossum, to be precise.
The intrepid marsupial, which had apparently boarded after the train departed from its Coney Island terminus, had curled up beneath a seat, comfortably close to a radiator, as the train rattled through the wilds of Brooklyn.

I put up with the rats under protest. I'm not messing with these suckers.

(81,855 posts)It was very late at night. I turned down a road. There was a large possum staring at me with it's teeth out. I was in the car, but it was still freaky.

(6,011 posts)Despite their rat-like appearance, opossums are not related to rats at all. Opossums are marsupials, or pouched mammals. Marsupials carry young in a pouch on the abdomen of the female. Relatives include the koala and kangaroo. The opossum holds the distinction of being North Americas only marsupial!

(6,011 posts)and this opossum isn't exactly the opposite of cute-
It was just minding its own business in a tree in our back yard. My son went out with a flashlight to get our dog because she had stayed out for a long time. He found her staring (in the dark) at a branch about 5 1/2 ' from the ground, and discovered that the branch was occupied. The possum's ears looked like they were made of wax.

(205,209 posts)He looks like a baby... And that isn't my rat, but he looked just like that. I was a psych major in college and I brought my lab rat home. The only issues he had were that he was kind of nervous. He eventually did calm down, but he stll preferred being in his cage. When I cleaned it, I'd leave a big paper bag open on the floor in case he felt like hiding. These are hooded rats, white underneath with a black (or brown) head and back. He liked to be scratched between his ears...

(9,899 posts)They would come in late at night to eat the kitty food. They had a good thing going till they started coming in earlier and we realized what they were up to.

(27,573 posts)I'd be afraid that guy would feel cornered and react violently. And there's rabies to worry about. FWIW, Opossums almost never get rabies.

(2,560 posts)no "o". I had one living in a tree at my place in Darwin. He used to tease my dog by coming down his tree to about 6 feet from the ground. The dog used to go bananas.
