Best Beach Boys album Ever (IMO)

Party!

Part surfer beach house, part beatnik gathering, part frat party with silliness and clinking bottles and ashtrays, somewhat socially aware, and about to give the Beatles a ride for artistic credibility... The Beach Boys "Party" album:

What's really amazing is the fact that they spent hardly any time on the album and viewed it as more of a contract requirement. It's recording coincides with a period for brian that was deeply experimental and featured recirdings that took months of studio wizardy and many, many re-takes. Pet sounds and the beginings of smile were consuming much of brian's time and attention. The party album was a simple "live" in the studio performance, augmented by the "party sounds" made by friends and family in the studio- I'm pretty sure most of the people in the beachboys camp didn't expect it to do much chart wise. The music industry used to be more responsive to the wants of the fans and honesty of the music. Brian Wilson would never be given the type of trust and support from a modern recording contract arrangement that he recieved through out most of the 60s.
I prefer Pet Sounds, but also love this one- for different reasons.
