We saw our first Brood II Cicada this morning. They probably will not hit full force for a few more weeks, but I recall 1979 and 1996 (this is the emergence year for this 17 year cycle east coast brood) using snow shovels to clean up after them. We saw a shell today after an infant had molted. I expect in three weeks to have trouble walking out on my lawn without stepping on 30 with each step. In 1996 it was mid-May when they started making that insane sound at night. I hope the little freaky looking bugs get lots of "action" fast and those larve drop and crawl back into the ground for another 17 years.

(72,790 posts)I was 18 and about to graduate high school in June.
I remember being outside a lot, watching school baseball, tennis and softball games.
I live in Connecticut.
Maybe I just don't remember, but I don't remember having to use snow shovels.

(4,851 posts)It was bad here, but they are a fickle bunch. My family in the the Bronx and Long Island never saw a one, but family on Staten Island got crushed.
