Great minds think alike: what ideas have you had only to see somebody else come up with said idea and implement them? When they built the skydome in Toronto I thought it was really cool that the roof would open and that you could fit any kind of sports activity there including a rink. Maybe 8 years ago, I suggested to my brother-in-law that they should put the rink in the skydome and open the roof and play hockey under the stars... the same way kids learn to love to play hockey (local outdoor rinks are everywhere in Canada). They could tell the fans to bundle up and serve them hot chocolate. Now they have these classic hockey games outside in lots of cities every winter in open air stadiums.
My dad asked me to order cookies for the grandkids of a friend of his. They called my dad "cookie monster" and he wanted something special for them. I went to a caterers in August and asked if they would do some gingerbread men only dress them in beachwear. They did a fantastic job. Now you see decorated, cut out cookies everywhere in every city, in every season.
Skinner In both instances I felt particularly inspired when the idea entered my brain. When things like this happen I think there should be a website where you can go and 'give away' your good ideas. A place where people could go to get inspired. Where their minds could be expanded for a few minutes. We already see people coming up with the same great political ideas at the same time in the blogosphere, not just the DU. Why not have a group on the DU dedicated to good ideas of all kinds that could then be reccommended to rank them.

(592 posts)My wife and I were sitting in a theater decades ago.... and didn't have anywhere to put our drinks... I told her "You would think they could easily put holders on the seat arms."
It was about a year or so later we entered a theater with cup holders! I said finally!
One of the simplest things that bugs the heck out of me lately... I have to use a laundry mat to wash my clothes.... Not one has automatic door openers or sliding doors. Everyone you have to put your basket down or hold it up against the building to open the door.

(10,573 posts)I always thought the idea of trying to reconstruct a crazy, unremembered night would be a funny story.
However, I make no claims to a stolen idea or anything like that. It's not that unusual a concept, and I would have never had the talent to turn it into anything.
I was glad to see that someone did do something with that storyline!

(Of course, I was going to do them but fell ill as I enetered young adulthood.)
Just 1:
I always felt that fuzzed-up electric rock guitar (through some really heavy amps like Mashalls) would pair up with the traditional horn section of a Swing band really well. But not lead rock guitar. Rhythm rock guitar. Big, fat chords worked into the arrangement in unison with the horns.
Now... Brian Setzer does this exact thing every night!

(17,742 posts)I usually have to wait a decade or so before it happens, but happen it will.
I've got a handful of such ideas right now. I know that in a decade or so, somebody will finally do them.

(78,249 posts)back in the early '80s. I wanted to go to some small city and run an independent, or in a few cases, even a network affiliate station.
Eventually most of the frequencies were snapped up by right-bent outfits like Sinclair or fundie dollar-a-holler outfits. All because no one wanted to listen to an Autistic teenager.

I have thought of another that I haven't seen developed yet... it's an internet-based service though, not a product. *shifty eyes*

You said great minds, not great ideas.

(18,219 posts)In the 1970's, this is what I thought would be a great idea, and I would have done it if I had any knowledge of the insurance industry, which I knew was too complicated. It should have just been and idea for pet rocks.

It just seemed so logical to hide the shiny skull showing through the dark brown hair...
He must not be letting anyone know he has a mindreader that scours the dreamworld looking for terrible ideas to sell.

(12,272 posts)I was just a kid when I went to the gun store with my dad and whispered to the clerk that I would like to buy one. He widened his eyes and said while it was a very good idea, he didn't know of anyone who made them.
I went back with my mom and bought Dad ear protection that year for Xmas. He already had a set, but he used mine, at least he pretended he did, I think he always bought the best quality and I wasn't a rich kid or anything.

Squeeze bottles for condiments, growing up my dad would take all of the Ketchup, Mustard, etc... out of their glass or plastic containers and put them into squeeze bottles that we kept in the house. One day, I said that they should just sell them in squeeze bottles. My dad said that was a great idea. I was 5. Several years later, they sell them in squeeze bottles.
