a soft wood used for furniture and carving.

My guess would be either red (Norway) pine or Douglas fir. More likely the latter.

...he cut the nail, sharpened them to a point, pushed the long end through the wood and the short end....(with the head) into the wood on that side. (the points would meet inside the wood)
