I was just in my local whiskey store. The Powerball jackpot has gone up.

Now at $600 million. Yeah, the odds are something like 1 in 175 million. Still, I broke down and bought a couple.

It's An Event, you know?

Part of the zeitgeist.

I just felt I should participate.

Even though it is basically a tax on those with poor math skills.

You could buy the little castle next door to have a berth, until your private jet came to take you on the next adventure.

There wasn't a lottery line. The guy that came in behind me, though, said that there was a line several dozen people long in the grocery store next door. There's a lesson there somewhere . . . .

And if I had a nickel for every time I've said those words to myself, and ended up in deep, deep shit, I'd have a corner on the nickel market.

to buy a ticket or two. Down by Blaine Washington. But only for a second. Might has well play the local lotto with those odds, it's ONLY one in about 15 million here Even with those odds I'd have to play for about 288 thousand years at a ticket a week before being likely to win.

hadn't already been in there and saw that there was no line at all, I doubt that I would have bothered. I am the poster child for "the unlucky". It's not that I have bad luck, and bad stuff happens to me. I just don't have good luck, so I never win anything where chance is involved. So, I rarely bother. But today I did.

Bought some good (single malt) scotch, and some rotgut (blended) scotch. Also a bottle of Cointreau - I have a friend that drinks it now and again, and was nearly out - and it was on sale.

And then, of course, there is the fact that Cointreau is memorialized in a Paul Henreid line in no less a flick than "Casablanca".

You sound vaguely like my Dad. He's a single-malt drinker. I'll stick with Johnnie Walker Black.
