The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSo proud of myself today Yuushh!
For months I have been combing the city in search of a new Futon mattress and a wooden bed frame. I have hated sleeping more or less on the floor. (Several mattresses on top of each other, on the floor.) Prices for a new mattress started here around 565 US dollars and bed frames started around $1000.00!
So I just happened to remember this little shop in Japantown, called Neat Asian Things and thought I would stop by there and see what he had in the shop. The owner, remembered me because I had two years ago purchased a bamboo tea table along with some awesome looking Samurai pillows (Which I still have.) I also bought some of those curtain dividers...called Noren.
I told him how frustrated I was looking for a simple Futon, and he showed me some, for (not 500 dollars) $138.00! He also had some wooden bed frames that ran around $350 to $400! So, I picked one out (A maroon colored mattress) and told him that next month, I would get the wood frame (I got too much stuff to do ..and can not afford to get the frame yet.)
got the mattress, wood frame next month!! Its different than this one pictured
I was so happy with the Sale, I purchased a Yukatta (Cotton blue grey summer kimono) which were on Sale for a great price! (Normally I think they run about 40 to 50 dollars.)
It was a little different than this but kinda looks like it
So, okay tonight I am still on the floor, but that all changes next month, when I purchase the wood frame! Yay!

(20,776 posts)Mattress.
A futon is traditional Japanese bedding consisting of padded mattresses and quilts pliable enough to be folded and stored away during the day, allowing the room to serve for purposes other than as a bedroom. The bedding set referred to as futon in Japan fundamentally consists of a shikibuton (bottom mattress) and a kakebuton (thick quilted bedcover).[1] The word futon is an English loanword derived from Japanese futon. It is Sino-Japanese, originally meaning 'round cushions filled with cattail flower spikes'; it is derived from Chinese fu or pu (cattail) + ton or tuan ( round).

(56,912 posts)what about the "Papasan" chair?
A Papasan chair (also called a bowl chair or known as a Mamasan chair for a double-seating version) is a large rounded bowl-shaped chair with an adjustable angle similar to that of a futon. The bowl rests in an upright frame traditionally made of rattan, but also sometimes made of sturdy wicker or wood. While similar designs of furniture have existed around the world, the papasan was introduced in the United States in the 1950s, and rose to great popularity in the 1970s.
The cushion of the chair is typically thick velveteen material filled with cotton fluff. In traditional papasans, the cushion can be removed and used outside of the sturdy frame, although it is hand-wash only. Non-traditional papasan chairs have sturdy metal or plastic frames, and are of similar design as traditional chairs. The metal or plastic frame typically folds into itself, allowing for easy transportation and storage. The folding type chairs are also known as "moon chairs" or "dish chairs" .
The Mamasan chair was introduced to the western world in the 1950's previously having been the preserve of the far eastern nations such as Indonesia, Thailand and Japan.
I used to work in Furniture so, please excuse my nerdiness and curiosity about it all

(28,394 posts)It has a cool rustic look. Don't you love when you find something you want at a reasonable price? I am currently going crazy looking for a lamp. Why are lamps so darn expensive!
Cute Yukatta too. Looks very comfortable.

(53,339 posts)The main thing is that you're happy--and can sleep content.
My favorite lamp used to be one that I made in shop in high school--until I got one at Pier 1 that was made to hold candles. It was frosted glass with a bamboo design--and I love bamboo. I bought a couple of antique Chinese wall hangings with bamboo designs, but I gave the best (and largest) one to a friend who is no longer a friend.
Enjoy your new bed and your kimono!
