Laptop, running Windows Vista. Boot it up, and when I put in my log-in password, it tells me the following:
"The User Profile Service service (sic) failed the login. User profile cannot be loaded."
Can't get past that point - I only ever set up one user - I guess that is why the tech guy who set up our computers at work installed a generic second user profile on them?
So, how to fix it?

(9,397 posts)I think the Microsoft links will tell me how, except I can't even get to the start menu. It happened once before, had to boot from my Norton emergency CD, then I could fix it. Just didn't feel like digging it out after midnight- will do over the weekend.
Thanks for asking!

(18,470 posts)...she brought her boyfriend's laptop to me because they were having the same error. I think what we wound up doing was blowing the existing profile away and creating a new one from scratch, then it worked OK afterwards. They had to do that a couple times with my previous work machine, erase the profile and build a new one from scratch (%@!##*%$ Windows).

(30,947 posts)I just restart the computer and that solves the problem for a while, and if it happens again, I restart again.

(289 posts)you may have to try a startup repair option, to repair all files. Or it may load correctly next time, which means the file is bad. Is it possible you had a virus?

(6,581 posts)I got the blue screen of death then a crash, upon restart, wouldn't load user profile.

(6,154 posts)If that doesn't fix it your options start to become much more limited since you only have one account.

(6,154 posts)Make sure you do a full back up of your important stuff as soon as you can log back in. It's possible the HD is starting to go (random corrupt files could be a red flag). Or it could just be that it was improperly shut down previously? Might also want to do a full virus and malware scan. Just my 2 cents. As a tech nerd I can't help but butt into tech threads of any type

(6,581 posts)Yeah, it's like 5 years old, so it could be going. I might look into a new one, there are always good deals at the tail end of the back to school rush.
