I am taking him into the emergency vet in a few hours. He has epilepsy, and gets these lick fits. When this happens, he chews on things he shouldn't, like rugs. We're pretty sure he, ahem, expelled the remnants, but he won't eat, throws up water after drinking, etc. He seems to be getting better, but better to be safe.
Worse thing? I started a new job and don't get paid until next week. So here's hoping its not a major blockage.

Why don't we have dog and cat smilies on DU?

Thanks for the kind words!

(11,791 posts)Surgery is not going well. The Berber carpet essentially destroyed parts of the intestines, which are being removed.
We may face yet another surgery. I am devastated right now.

(11,791 posts)and we can afford the surgeries. But good grief!
Thanks for the wishes.
a la izquierda
(11,791 posts)Well, the surgery is over and the dog survived it. He had 1ft. of intestines removed. The damage was quite severe and if he survives the night, he's close to out of the woods. If he survives the next 48 hours, he'll be "fine" in that he should survive.
I'm not a praying person, I have long since had a crisis of faith. But if you're a praying person, I really need all the prayers, good thoughts, vibes, etc., that you can send my brave little guy.
Thanks for being such a supportive community.

(6,011 posts)Dogs always seem to have run-ins with health problems on Sundays, or after hours. One of mine had an ear flap turned into ribbons by a raccoon, which the vet had to embroider together back into one piece, at night of course.
I'm sending vibes for a full recovery.
What is his name? I think he's very cute.

(11,791 posts)He's a doll and fortunately quite young, strong, and vibrant.

(205,161 posts)Can't help wondering if your vet has considered this. I've had two dogs (I adopt older pups) who had Cushing's and seizures were one of the symptoms and they also ate inappropriate things. What a sweet pup! Hope that all turns out okay for both of you...

(11,791 posts)We had a dog who had Cushings, and he eventually died of it. I'll have to see if this is a possibility.
Thanks for the suggestion!

(11,791 posts)My little trooper survived the night and right now is doing well enough that he may be able to come home tonight (if they can get him to eat a little bit). We're not out of the woods yet, but by the end of the week, if he's doing well, he should be fine...minus 1 foot of intestine.
Thanks all for the sweet comments and thoughts.

(6,011 posts)and will be ready for food tomorrow. Does the veterinarian listen for bowel sounds the way they do with humans who've had
surgery? Before the patient has solid food peristaltic action has to start up again.
