You might lose a few hours of your life, but it's worth it.

For me, kitten pics would only make it worse if I didn't have real kittehs around.

He was almost 18. I had that cat since middle school.

I travel a lot for work, (I'm on the road now on a 7 month contract) and I may come as a package deal (myself plus kitteh).

My current apartment allows pets.

I am sure you miss him desperately.

I wish you the best in making your decision. (If you'd like a grown cat, I might be able to hook you up. I have ten . . . )

I was joking about you taking one of my cats.* But if you somehow made it down here, I'd take you around to the shelters and we'd find you a sweet love.

* Ten are too many. I dream of finding them homes, but can't for two reasons: some of them aren't adoptable, and we'd be broken-hearted.

The best way to break the fever is to view the pix and then head to the shelter to let a kitty or two pix you. Good luck!

My old cat died in the spring of '12. I knew I would someday get another cat, but was in no hurry. Until a student begged me to take the last kitten from a feral litter her family rescued; they'd found homes for the rest. I said I'd think about it, and the cat showed up after school a couple of days later. A tiny little ball of fur, eyes still blue.

At about that time, my mom lost her dog to old age, and was really grieving. She showed up at my house a couple of days after the arrival of the kitten, crying and telling me how depressed she was. I scooped up the kitten, plopped her into my mom's arms, and said, "here."

Because there's something about young life that brings healing and energy. She stopped crying immediately, drew a breath, and became enchanted. She still grieves the dog, but in a healthier way. She called me a few days later to say she'd been to the local cat rescue...and brought home TWO kittens.

That's what happened the last time I was contemplating a cat. I don't regret it, even though that kitten, a year old now, is a holy terror.

How would you travel with a cat? That's a pretty big obstacle.

I got him in the summer between 7th and 8th grade, and I was 31 when he passed away (I was on the road then and left him with my parents). It was very painful not to say goodbye or have any closure, but his health was failing.

This gig has me feeling a lot lonlier than I was in the past when I've been on the road. I used to always go out with co-workers, and until now, have been placed in supporter housing (where I could pick someone's brain about the area). Now I'm the supervisor in the region, and I am at least a decade older than my oldest staffer, so not exactly 'cool' to hang out with. I also have my own apartment (which allows cats) and no supporter housing. I literally go from the office to the apartment and read on my Kindle. I need something to break that pattern up.

As I move up the ladder in my field, housing gets more scarce. I suppose I could bring Kitty with me and look for an apartment/hotel (short term) that allows cats.

with the traveling, and it would probably adapt well.

My cats have always hated change, hated ANYTHING "different," but then, they've never traveled. I have a friend with a cat that is constantly on the road with her, and she doesn't seem to mind.
