Yes. We are a community. We laugh and we cry together; we celebrate and we mourn together. And we have lasted nearly fourteen years. I expect us to last another fourteen, too...

Like every community, some beloved members leave, and return. Others never come back. And still others are always here, forming the bedrock of our community.

A capacity for empathy, and to be able to put ourselves in the shoes of others.

There are liberals without this quality. There are conservatives with this quality. And vice versa.

A friend who stood me up told me recently her cat died.

I was none too sympathetic.

I told her the Chinese make cat soup.

She won't stand me up again because I won't hear from her.

but i am opposed to people who treat their pets better than people,
and not a big fan of being stood up.

I dated such an enthusiast, who was leaving all her life assets to
animal protection.

But people were like furniture, and she treated them with toxicity.

Well I feel they fit here as a balance to the well-meaning though
naive idea that we're all harmonious and one big happy family.
There's a lot of conflict in life.

And they fit anywhere because unpopular though they may be, and
none too nice to she who has stood me up and dramatized our
interactions, they are not vile, obscene, nor extremely unfriendly,
and they were slightly tongue in cheek, so it's a matter of free speech.

Let's not beat it like a dead horse. WHERE did that expression come from?

Every time I've asked for recommendations I've hit the jackpot. From book suggestions to recipes to suggested tomato varieties for the deep south DU has been part of my education (not to mention politically). People here have an incredible range of knowledge and expertise and its been my pleasure to use it whenever possible. And I've enjoyed sharing a little of my life-knowledge as well.

Because no matter what gets posted, 99.9% of the time you won't get any (or much) snark.

Maybe some ribbing, some teasing, or if needed, some correction, but, with the exception of the few trolls that show up, there's no real nastiness.

And there can be found plenty of information on almost any topic.

Not to mention the TONS of support if someone needs it.

Because of my situation (bedridden and the tv died, I find that I don't really miss it though), I'm glad that I have a place to go for information and other things, toons, science, etc., where I don't have to worry about being called names or being attacked if I mention I'm a liberal or a democrat.

I'm so glad that I finally joined!

It really feels like a family.
