For his second solo studio outing in 1974, Eric Clapton named the album for the Florida house he was living in while recording. The album received mixed reviews, as it marked a departure from his earlier "Clapton is God" career phase, and that didn't sit well with a lot of critics. The supersonic solos gave way to a subtler tone, and Clapton began to let his voice do the work. Not every song on the album works, but the ones that do hit the sweet spot oh so right.
During the summer of 1974, you couldn't get away from Clapton's take on the Bob Marley tune "I Shot the Sheriff," and the track didn't wear well after a while. But listened to again after many years, it takes on a renewed vibrancy, perhaps enhanced by the intervening death of its author. Favorite tracks of mine include "Please Be With Me" and "Let it Grow." Backed by the estimable Yvonne Elliman, "Get Ready" works a fine magic, and "Steady Rollin' Man" has some surprises in store that unfortunately date it irrevocably to its time.
