My wife finally got a job that isn't holding the Federal Jury Duty thing against her. She is working on average of 40+ hours a week. Clients are calling and begging the office for her--Which shocked the hell out of her. She never thinks she does a good enough job.
Anyways I know money is tight for us and my Dad offered to get us something for our anniversary. He doesn't like to give money but actual gifts.
I figure since he always gives me an X Box live subscription I would gear a gift that my wife would enjoy.
She like those match 3 games and hidden object games. So I thought a tablet would work great for those type of games and she can take it a lot of places.
I was thinking of asking it as a thing we both use but would let her use it. I also thought it might help as a GPS thing for her work.
She will google and map out her route for the day every night on the computer but sometimes it hasn't been going well. Granted she works within our county now and not travel outside the county BUT it does have a couple disadvantages. She had to go from the southern end of the county to the north and the office gave her only 15 minutes to get from one place to another and there was no way. It took her a half hour and put her about 45 minutes behind schedule.
I figure a table would help her with directions.
Anyways Does anyone know what type of tablet I should suggest to my Dad since he has asked me about what we wanted for our anniversary?

(3,121 posts)I kid about since he had an x-box why not get me and my brothers x-boxes for Christmas. This was at Thanksgiving. A week later I had my early Christmas gift.

(8,217 posts)I can't suggest an iPad that isn't connected to a network.
That is the problem I have with tablets. They need to be connected to something like Verizon, AT&T, Sprint or T-Mobile to be able to use it on the car or something. Particularly when trying to figure out directions.
A smart phone can give GPS quite well. Still, you're right. A tablet works as something with a bigger display and you can pre-program a route while you have wifi.
However, a decent smart phone would work pretty well for GPS and games. It really depends on what she already has.

(13,918 posts)The Ipad is of course the standard. Pretty easy to use, kinda the standard by which other tablets are judged. But at the upper end, cost wise.
I was playing with one of the google Nexus tablets. Much lighter than the full ipad, though the Mini is probably in the same range. But the cost difference is crazy. If wrist strain, using it away from desks and stands is an issue, a smaller tablet might be nice.
Most of the tablets will do most of the "simple" games like you mention. GPS directions seems to be a bit more challenging.
I dont know if the same is true of tablets as phones, but one of the Nokia windows phones big selling points is a completely independent GPS signal, with no paid data use. But the windows ap store is significantly smaller. Then again, since most aps seem to be nearly identical duplicates or limited versions trying to get you to buy a paid version, thats been a limited concern to me as I consider such things.
The Ipad, at least the new 4g ipad, seems to be able to locate itself via gps only, without using data. The problem is it cant pull up maps without data. So unless you have a previously downloaded map for it to run on, it identifies your location splendidly.. on a blank map. Also, it cant seem to do directions without the data connection. Unless there's some paid ap that allows it to do so. I havnt tried it on any other tablet yet.

We lasted almost 30 years together.
YMMV
