There was a host of interesting selections I could have picked for today's album. As you might already know, it was 52 years ago today when Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and the Big Bopper died in that plane crash in Iowa. And celebrating birthdays today include Dave Davies of the Kinks and Nick Hawkins of Big Audio Dynamite (one of my favorite albums - 'The Globe'). However, last night as I was reading Rolling Stone Magazine online I read a news article about the Decemberists and because of that they are my AOTD with their most recent release - "The King is Dead".
Well you may ask why The Decemberists? Well it turns out that the keyboardist of the Decemberists, Jenny Conlee, is a breast cancer survivor. And because of that, for years the Decemberists would raise money for Susan G Kormen thru their Team Jenny group. But as of yesterday, the band felt that politics shouldn't be a part of Breast Cancer research. They'll still have Team Jenny fundraiser group but now 100% of the sales will go directly to Planned Parenthood.

Team Jenny Funds Will Now Support Planned Parenthoods Breast Health Emergency Fund
The Decemberists are deeply troubled by Komen for the Cures recent decision to cut off funding to Planned Parenthood, a vital resource in the battle against breast cancer. Providing cancer screenings to low income women is integral to the prevention and defeat of breast cancer and it is unconscionable that Komen should politicize this very important issue by bowing to the fear campaign being waged against PP by the right. Weve decided to redirect the proceeds of the Team Jenny t-shirts and buttons away from Komen for the Cure. 100% of the net profits of these items will be instead donated to Planned Parenthoods Breast Health Emergency Fund
Well for that I thought I'd make them the Album of the Day. I only have 2 albums of theirs, this one and The Hazards of Love. This is a group from Portland, Oregon with an alt-bluegrass sound, very soulful writing and an album I think you'll all enjoy! Here's some video for those without the album that would like to learn more:
