I got to know only too late who he was, and what a great performer he was.
Growing up, I only knew him for the character roles he played on TV. Older, unsavory, Brillcreemed men who were very unappealing.
I grew to love his character on Law And Order, though, and learned more about his song-and-dance past in the theater.
That's when I learned what a treasure he was, and about his wonderful rendition of "The Kind Of September", a song I had loved since I was a kid.
Jerry Orbach was an American treasure...

And I've been re-watching Murder She Wrote with Angela Lansbury and Jerry made many appearances on that show. Always had great character parts.
