I think Domingo may be with us for some time longer....

Thank you all for your support over the weekend.

I've found over the years that within 4 days with the smaller birds, they either recover or let go. At 4 days, you know which way it is going to go. This is only day 3, but there have been distinct and important , as well as totally unexpected, improvements in her condition.

When I found Domingo down and partially paralyzed on Saturday, I held no hope for her. In fact, if an avian vet had been readily available, I would have taken her expecting to put her down. But none is available in these parts, so I hunkered down to keep her as comfortable as possible. I honestly did not expect her to make it through the night.

By Sunday, she was actively helping me to hand feed her. In the meantime, I'd moved the food dish on the cage floor next to her so Sage would not have to travel to feed her. He sits with her, eats, feeds her, eats, feeds her, until they rest. Then he returns to his swing where he can watch over her. That includes, btw, attacking me fiercely when I interfere, lol. Her eye that had been only half open was now all the way open.

Yesterday morning, I found her trying to eat sunflower seeds (her favorite). She kept losing them, though, so I think she wasn't strong enough to hull them. So I opened a few for her, but she lost interest. Probably due to me. She also didn't want me to hold her any more, and bit me continuously and vigorously while I was trying to hand feed her. She ended up wearing at least as much food as I got into her, although once it was on her tongue, she relished it. I also thought I saw her move her paralyzed leg in the morning...and again in the evening.

This morning I woke to the sound of the birds quietly chirping, both outside and in. I came fully awake when I recognized the distinct chirp Domingo makes when Sage is feeding her. I haven't heard that sound since Friday -- I have seen him feed her, but she has been silent or very, very quiet until today.

Even better, she tried again to climb up to the perch. She has tried that several times over the last few days, but this time she was moving more quickly. I moved around the side of the cage and confirmed -- she has regained use of her leg!!!! Both feet were now clinging to the cage, and both helping with the climb!!!! Her formerly paralyzed leg is still very weak, but it works!!!!

I realize, of course, that we have only bought her some time and the original issue, stroke or whatever, could still recur at any time. But I have seen birds come back in the past from the seemingly impossible and live another year in comfort. So I have hope she will be with us for a while now.

She has good reason to live, with such a loving partner. Sage is a dilute peach-faced who I named only in part for his lovely mossy grey-blue-green feathered coat. He has, in the past, demonstrated deep wisdom along with his absolute devotion. I've been fortunate to witness it again in the past few days.

I still remember our pet parakeet. He was the most awesome little bird.
I'm glad Domingo gets to stay a while longer.
