Rockin Out on IMVU
On IMVU you can create your own Avatar, which represents you in the IMVU world. The worlds are
your own creation. You can purchase a room you like, and add furniture to it, or simply go to other
public rooms and chat with people. You can listen to music that you have bought at the IMVU Music
store, or listen to others music.
IMVU has a catalog. By purchasing credits, you can purchase nearly anything you need to visit the IMVU worlds. Clothing, Hair, eyes, heads, shoes, nails, jewelry, and create your own fashion style.
In the IMVU world, you can do what you may have only imagined that you could do. Create places of fantasy
or of the everyday life. Such things as creating a place like a Japanese style ONSEN.
A place where you can sit and chat with your friends over dinner...or soak in the hot water.
IMVU has many magical places.. and things you can do. You can role play to your hearts content..
Or Just be with good friends... and have memories that last a life time.
I love being on IMVU because I meet so many great people from around the world. Friends in Japan, Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Russia, the UK, Australia, Canada, Mexico, almost all countries and every state in the United States. If I become tired of the rooms I have created, I can visit new ones.

(11,175 posts)I feel very much unplugged-in to stuff like IMVU. (Pardon the stereotyping in my title. I'm sure some of my fellow boomers are fully conversant with these things, but many of us aren't.) I've been vaguely aware of the Second Life website. From what I knew of it, I had the impression that it resembled your description of IMVU. Would you give a suitably dumbed-down summary of the similarities and differences between Second Life and IMVU?
AsahinaKimi
(20,776 posts)And secondly IMVU has better looking avatars to begin with. Most of the Avatars I have seen on Second life were pretty pug ugly. But anyone who has played around with three dimensional programs will tell you IMVU has the best looking avatars and the furniture and rooms are very beautiful. Its true, that in Second Life you can walk about or fly, where as on IMVU you have to jump from spot to spot. But there are spots that are designed to allow your avatar to dance, or do certain moves.
You maybe surprised to find there are a lot of plus 50 year old people on IMVU as well as kids. I have several friends who still enjoy not only playing on IMVU, but creating such things as clothing, Fast Cars and beautiful Houses. The Developers can actually make money, by making their products. Some people just prefer to make products and earn some extra cash. If you are proficient enough you can make some excellent side money.
There are so many things you can do there. You can go and dance with friends. Chat..Do Role playing. There are different groups you can join. For example if you are a sports fan, you might even find a chat room, that is a sports bar for your team, and find members who live in your area rooting for your team.
Of course, I have been on IMVU for over 5 years and have only met a few people from my city. I have met many people from Southern California, and have as many Asian friends on line as well.
Another difference I thought of, is that in Second Life if you get a chat room, you have to RENT it, where as on IMVU you can purchase a room and make it public and own that room. Not only can you own the room, you can have your friends be moderators, who have the power to kick out anyone who is disruptive or other wise unruly. On second life, you might be able to earn money as a Renter, but it takes a long time to earn enough to actually buy your own room. Most people will not sell their property, and would rather just be satisfied renting it out to someone.
I would much rather own my own place, than have to each month shell out credits to someone who owns the property I have built on.

(11,175 posts)I've had it in the back of my mind that someday I might look into Second Life, but I'd never heard of IMVU. Now, if I ever decide to go that route, I'll know to check out both of them.
AsahinaKimi
(20,776 posts)It doesn't even need to be a room. It could be a campfire on a beach!

(20,776 posts)You know, I have a friend who is in the hospital for Cancer.. and has just started Chemotherapy. She is so lucky that she can bring her lap top and play on IMVU, and be with her friends when she is in a time of great pain, and scared about her future. It allows her to look forward to signing on and being with us, after her grueling day.

AsahinaKimi
(20,776 posts)It took me five years to perfect my avatar the way I wanted it to be, but...that comes with experience..and finding the right developers who had the best stuff. BY the way, the Godzilla was custom made. Some times developers will take requests! I also had
Kilowog made for my green lantern room.

(20,776 posts)It was the city thing. You could create tornadoes..monsters invading the city. It got kind of boring after awhile. I like interaction between people. I am a mod in a room right now... with a bunch of silly girls..still kinda fun.

(6,154 posts)I've never gotten into the whole virtual online community thing, aside from forums but I can understand their appeal. It's great that you have such a place and enjoy meeting people there! Before they went 3D and in fact even 2D there were MUDS and MOOs online that consisted of text based online communities where people roll played. They were all the rage back in the 90s. I understand some of them still exist.
AsahinaKimi
(20,776 posts)I used to hang out there and chat with people, that is ..until the place was bought up by some Christian organization that banned certain words and word usages. Infact, I had heard that after I left they were trying to make people pray before they entered a chat room, and I am sure that sunk them even lower in population numbers.
I always thought IMVU would be great to have a DU chat room. I would even set it up if I knew members from here would go there. Not sure if it would interest Skinner or not.
