Once you register, there is help available at the link above. THE DOWNLOAD IS SAFE. I can attest to that. To be 100000% sure, just virus scan it once it downloads, but I'm quite sure you'll find it's safe.

Free = the basics, including clothing and a "room". Right now I'm a free avatar and I'm ok with that. It's a bit annoying that my "username" is guest_myusername but meh I can live with that for now.

Paid = just like real life, you get what you pay for. More fashionable clothes, etc etc

It really depends on how much you want to do and what you want to do.

I'm really a raw newb myself, but I understand the concepts pretty well.

It's like real life: you can live super cheap or free for the basics. If you want "more", typically that involves work/money/barter/fill_in_the_blank.

What does the 'Guest' in front of my Avatar name mean?
When you register an IMVU avatar, you can chat for free, meet people on the IMVU network, and spend your free credits on clothing, scenes, animations, etc. Until you have bought your avatar name (or a credits package that includes an avatar name) your name will appear prefixed by 'Guest'.

How can I get rid of the "Guest" status?
Purchasing your name will remove 'Guest' status and reserve your name for the lifetime of IMVU. Buying your name is also a pre-requisite to becoming an IMVU Developer. To purchase your name, click on the BUY CREDITS tab in the menu at the top of any IMVU web page and follow the prompts.

Will I need to purchase my name again if I register a new avatar?
Yes. Your name registration only affects the account it was purchased for. Name registration from one account does not transfer to a second.

Can I purchase a name currently used by a "guest" avatar?
IMVU has recently had a policy change regarding new users with registered names taking on those names of inactive guest accounts. Previously there was a process that allowed for this, but due to growing concerns over account security and issues of avatar identity, we have temporarily disabled this feature. This will remain in effect until further notice.

Can I delete my current IMVU account and re-register using the same avatar name?
No. For now, each name registered has a single lifespan. This means that even if you delete your current account with the name "ABC", you will not be able to turn around and register a new account with that name.
