The sport is believed to have originated with farmers who used poles to leap over small water drainage channels to access different plots of land. In East Frisia this sport is known as Pultstock-Jumping. Today the sport is primarily practiced for fun or to entertain tourists, but there still is an official annual National Fierljepping Manifestation (NFM) in the Netherlands, and championships are contested in six leagues and numerous clubs.

...I thought maybe he was practicing a way to escape tigers. Tigers can swim, so you can't go in the water. He'll just jump right in and eat you. So, you stick the pole in the middle of the water and start climbing like a maniac so the tiger can't get you (the pole is too skinny for the tiger to climb). Then, because the pole is so long, you get a few yard running start before he gets out of the water. That's when you consider adding sprinting to your exercise routine.

I guess your explanation could be another good reason. Well, maybe not 'good', but acceptable.

...if you're going to be in tiger country (like the zoo) be sure to carry your anti-tiger canal jumping pole with you at all times. It's also useful for jumping over hordes of zombies, so it's a win/win.

Happy Friday!
