I was born after 1940 but I know the song. I learned it from my Mom, who was born in 1920.

(8,646 posts)I have no memory of singing it in school or seeing it on TV, but when I hit play, I remembered it instantly. Cool song.
Most of the songs from my childhood were French. There's probably no YouTube of them. J'entends le Moulin sticks in my head...Il est né le divin enfant was a favorite at Christmas.
Then there was the music my parents listened to. Olivia Newton John's "Let get physical" was my favorite song for years when I was little, lol.

(22,057 posts)memories of childhood, lying in my bed in the dark and listening to her put the younger kids to sleep with her soft, sweet voice, sounding almost like a bell at just the right times. I still sing it to myself at times.....
I also love to quote a piece of nonsense she taught me...
"As I was walking up the stair
I met a man who wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish that man would go away!"
Thanks to google now I know that was from a song too. "The little man who wasn't there" apparently came from an earlier poem called "Antigonish"
Needless to say, I had an intriguing childhood.

(18,479 posts)I met a man who wasnt there
He wasnt there again today
Oh, how I wish hed go away
When I came home last night at three
The man was waiting there for me
But when I looked around the hall
I couldnt see him there at all!
Go away, go away, dont you come back any more!
Go away, go away, and please dont slam the door
Last night I saw upon the stair
A little man who wasnt there
He wasnt there again today
Oh, how I wish hed go away
IMHO this is what you would get if Freud read Nietzsche.

Come out and play with me
And bring your dolly three
Climb up my apple tree
Slide down my rainbow
Into my cellar door
And we'll be jolly friends forevermore
