(3,220 posts)It's a complete contradiction and paradox in our minds. We believe that everything must have a start and finish, everything is real only if we see it, and nothingness cannot exist.
The concept of 'nothing' is illogical when described as a feeling, as feelings always require something as a stimulus. People can't experience 'nothing,' and therefore there's no reason to worry about it.

On a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero.

(2,208 posts)...but I'm not afraid of being dead.
When you're dead, you're dead.
But dying can be ugly and painful and take a long time.
I want to go fast.
Once I'm gone, no problem...

(21,484 posts)I sure as hell don't want to die, but I'm not sure I fear it.
Being tremendously co-dependent, mainly I don't want to die because of how the people I leave behind will feel. Thinking of their grief kills me.

(71,265 posts)My grandmother was in a coma for a month before she died and it was hard to watch. I loved her very much. My mother and I took shifts with her in the last 3 years of her life so she did not have to leave her home. She died looking in my eyes.
My friend died of brain cancer and I took care of him the last 6 months of his life and watched a strong 69 year old man turn into an invalid. He was in so much pain but the hospice took over and he had a peaceful death.
I want to just drop dead and that is it.

(9,129 posts)I had a few VERY close calls during my trucking years.
By any measure, I shouldn't be here today.
I'm not afraid of death, but as was mentioned upthread,
I hope it isn't painful. I'm a wuss when it comes to pain.
