Had to say goodbye this afternoon to our 14 yo friend, a totally crazy, far too beautiful chinchilla mix who had developed mouth cancer. Her passing was gentle and peaceful and all I could have wanted for her.
She was a wonderful member of our family for 12 years. Until the last couple of months, she had a grand time. Rest in peace, Jeweler. You will be missed.
On edit:
Someone downthread asked how she got her name. My younger son was 3 when we adopted the cat from friends who couldn't keep her anymore. We didn't think he had heard us talking about the new kitty but perhaps he did.
Son was obsessed with remote control vehicles at the time. He woke up the morning before we were to bring her home and told us he had dreamed of "his cat Jeweler, who was flying a remote control helicopter." How could we not re-name her? She seemed perfectly comfortable with the name change. She was Lily for 2 years, Jeweler for 12 1/2.
Thanks again to everyone for their support. It helps.

(36,281 posts)I'm so sorry for your loss, mcar. We have six cats and two dogs. The oldest is a 14 year old siamese and while the youngest is only two, the next youngest is 10. All are currently healthy but we know the time for letting them go is coming. It's going to be a tough couple of years when it begins. My thoughts go out to you, my friend. The last ride to the vet is just about the hardest thing ever.
mcar
(42,307 posts)We've used the same vet for 20 years and he knew our girl well. That helped quite a lot Mike.
Our first cat was a Siamese mix and I loved her dearly. She lasted till 16 so I hope yours has some more good years yet in her. Now we've got two wacky dogs, both young and wondering where their nemesis has gone.

Our Tigger moved on last month. She was a shelter cat. Tributes to an owners cat are used for shelters in general across the country.
Thanks ben. My condolences on the loss of your Tigger.

(20,219 posts)it is so hard to lose our furry babies. Even when it's peaceful.....when it's their time, the heartbreak for us is beyond intense.

Here's hoping she's enjoying lots of her favorite tuna fish juice tonight.

(42,307 posts)We have a dog too and we're also keeping my MIL's dog while she's in rehab so another kitty isn't in the cards right now. But maybe down the road...I love cats.
