He became famous in America for the soundtrack for The Life Aquatic, in which he did wonderful, wonderful Bowie covers. But he's wonderful otherwise too. Here's one of those covers. (I suppose it's foreign by being first English and then Portuguese)

Tu m'as tendu la main
Pour m'emmener doucement
Jusqu'au premier matin

J'avancais toujours vers toi
Comme une etoile qui danse
Et le ciel a mis ses ailes
Pour me voler mon innocence

chorus x1

English

Once again

I've never see fragile love
I've always give all
all alone by myself, I send you these few words ...

I, I'm the lost one, along your skin
When we were hidden near the boats,
To get our bodies naked

One day there's like that people passing
It's life growing
We don't understand ourself every time
And one day we love

(chorus)
Oh no no no
We don't forget us just like that
You don't know
But I keep in me some pieces of you
Oh no no no
We don't forget all of that
It's our love story
I'd like to live it once again

And against the waves of the see
You gave me your hand
To bring me nicely
Until the break of dawn

I always walked to you
Like a star in a dance
And the sky put its wings
To steal my innoncence

One day there's like that people passing
It's life growing
We don't understand ourself every time
And one day we love

chorus x1

One day there's like that people passing
It's life growing
We don't understand ourself every time
And one day we love

From Coeur de Lilas, a colorful scene from this gritty depression-era film with screen idol Jean Gabin and also featuring singer-actress Frehel. A musical number of the incomparable Josephine Baker from the film Zouzou. An amusaing number from the 30s comedy Circonstances Attenuantes starring the great character actor Michel Simon.

Seul sur le sable
Les yeux dans l'eau
Mon rêve était trop beau
L'été qui s'achève, tu partiras
À cent mille lieues de moi

Comment oublier ton sourire

Hélène, things you do
Make me crazy 'bout you
Pourquoi tu pars, reste ici
J'ai tant besoin d'une amie
Hélène, things you do,
Make me crazy about you
Pourquoi tu pars si loin de moi
Là où le vent te porte
Loin de mon cœur qui bat...

Hélène, things you do,
Make me crazy 'bout you
Pourquoi tu pars, reste ici
Encore juste une nuit

Seul sur le sable
Les yeux dans l'eau,
Mon rêve était trop beau
L'été qui s'achève, tu partiras,
À cent mille lieues de moi
Comment t'aimer si tu t'en vas
Dans ton pays loin là-bas
Dans ton pays loin là-bas
Dans ton pays loin de moi

LOVE BOY

Six-pack in a chocolate color
he says France but more likely Morocco
All day in the gym
then it's not necessary to check his honesty

he's not proficient in words
he speaks with his hands
he's burning with his eyes
when he says, "let's go"
my heart dances in circles

and he sleeps in my bed
and he eats from my plate
I have a permanent trick
twice a week
I have a love boy

he's not sensitive and not romantic
it doesn't make a difference if he's in favor or against
he doesn't need to know a lot
he's a doctor of honor in how to touch
I don't need to impress
or be entertaining
because I know
when he will tell me, "let's go"
my heart will dance in circles

36. Die Ärzte - Schrei nach Liebe
Mon Sep 16, 2013, 07:05 AM
Sep 2013

Schrei nach Liebe

Du bist wirklich saudumm.
Darum gehts dir gut.
Hass ist deine Attitüde
Ständig kocht dein Blut
Alles muss man dir erklären,
Weil du wirklich gar nichts weißt!
Höchstwahrscheinlich nicht einmal, was Attitüde heißt!

Ohohoh ARSCHLOCH!!!

Warum hast du Angst vorm Streicheln?
Was soll all der Terz?

Ohohoh ARSCHLOCH, ARSCHLOCH, ARSCHLOCH!!!

Cry for love

You are really dumb,
which is why you're doing so well.
Hate is your attitude,
your blood boils constantly.
Everything needs to be explained to you
because you really don't know anything,
most likely not even what attitude means!

Your violence is only a silent cry for love,

your combat boots long for tenderness,
you have never learned to articulate yourself,
and your parents never had time for you ... ohhh... asshole!

Why do you have fear of caressing, what's the meaning of all this nonsense?
under the laurel wreath with acorns, I know your heart beats,
and romanticism is only grey theory for you,
between Störkraft and den Onkelz (nazi bands) is a Kuschelrock LP! (Cuddle rock, a soft rock compilation franchise)

Your violence is only a silent cry for love,
your combat boots long for tenderness,
you have never learned to articulate yourself,
and your parents never had time for you ... ohhh... asshole!

Because you have problems that interest nobody,
because you have fear of intimacy you are a fascist.
You don't have to project your self-hate on others,
so nobody notices what a lovely man you are ... ohhh...

Your violence is only a silent cry for love,
your combat boots long for tenderness,
you have never learned to articulate yourself,
and your girlfriend never has time for you ... ohhh.
Asshole, asshole, asshole!

38. 99 Luftballons/99 Red Balloons
Mon Sep 16, 2013, 08:38 AM
Sep 2013

I like this Nena song from, I think, 1983. Lyrics posted in English:

You and I, and a little toy shop
Buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got
Set them free at the break of dawn
'Til one by one, they were gone

Back at base, bugs in the software
Flash the message, "Some thing's out there"
Floating in the summer sky
Ninety-nine red balloons go by

Ninety-nine red balloons
Floating in the summer sky
Panic lads, it's a red alert
There's something here from somewhere else

The war machine springs to life
Opens up one eager eye
Focusing it on the sky
Ninety-nine red balloons go by

Ninety-nine Decision Street
Ninety-nine ministers meet
To worry, worry, super-scurry
Call the troops out in a hurry

This is what we've waiting for
This is it boys, this is war
The President is on the line
As ninety-nine red balloons go by

Ninety-nine knights of the air
Riding super high-tech jet fighters
Everyone's a super hero
Everyone's a Captain Kirk

With orders to identify, to clarify and classify
Scrambling in the summer sky
As ninety-nine red balloons go by
Ninety-nine red balloons go by

Ninety-nine dreams I have had
Every one a red balloon
Now it's all over and I'm standin' pretty
In this dust that was a city

If I could find a souvenir
Just to prove the world was here
And here is a red balloon
I think of you and let it go

44. Caruso by Lucio Dalla
Mon Sep 16, 2013, 10:28 AM
Sep 2013

I can't post links to it, but it's a beautiful song with a very haunting melody. The lyrics are also beautiful. Lucio Dalla was an Italian folk singer/songwriter from my hometown. He died a couple of years ago and was very private about his personal life. Yet, everyone pretty much knew he was homosexual.

Well before he became famous, he rented a small loft above my apartment building to write songs. After his lease ended, my dad rented the same space for his engineering drawings (at the time, they had to be done by hand - no CAD/CAM).

Anyway, beautiful song...

I just love that song, Lei (She). It was originally written in English by a French/Armenian singer/songwriter, Charles Aznavour, but it sounds better in Italian. Renga's Ferro e Cartone album is good too on iTunes.
