I grew up in Louisville in the early 80's. I recall September being considerably cooler and feeling more like fall even early in the month. October as a result was much cooler if my memory is correct. I recall most of the Halloweens I spent in those early days of my youth were quite cold. I remember my breath fogging up the inside of my masks and sometimes needing a jacket over my costume which I was never excited about. It is September however that leaves me most nostalgic these days. The majority of this month was hot, warm and muggy. It wasn't always like this. Climate change notwithstanding.

(20,176 posts)I grew up 3000' up the side of a mountain in the lower Berkshires in Western CT. I moved away in HS to the city (Hartford, then Manhattan), then have done a tour of the Eastern seaboard since...yes, it's warmer here now than it was there then...but it also snowed in August there which has been hardly typical anywhere else except maybe the high plains of CO and WY. I'm currently on the high side of the bowl around DC in the highlands at Wheaton, MD.
Temperature here right now: 67'F with an expected high of 77'F and a low of 63'F
Temperature there right now: 52'F with an expected high of 74'F and a low of 45'F
My recollections of September there are the days that stick out, not the average days. I remember the first day of school getting snowed out and the winds that would push you across the yard. Those are the Septembers of my childhood. I also remember getting frostbite at 2am in July though. None of that is normal there or anywhere south of Labrador.

(36,379 posts)Septembers were cold and foggy in the mornings followed but hot afternoons, then the fog rolled back in late in the afternoon and cooled things down. I now live inland and the cooling fog visits for shorter periods: cooler is subjective.

(22,845 posts)Septembers and fall in general are definitely warmer in Maryland than they were in NJ. But I think climate change has also had an impact.
In our 23 years in Maryland, I've seen spring arrive earlier and earlier. Hot days occur later in the fall than they used to.

(5,937 posts)We used to also have what were almost regular thunder storms in the spring and summer. As a child I actually enjoyed them, they cooled the air and cleared it of a lot of the allergens that made me sick.

(30,947 posts)and September was as hot as summer. Though now, I live in North Georgia, and this September has been a lot cooler than in past years, as I have not had to run my A/C 24/7.

(24,146 posts)it was warmer early in the month, then we got our week-long rainstorm. but since the rain stopped, the weather has been quite seasonable. mid 60s-low 70s, below 50 at night. we're already at the time of year that snow could fly any day.

(4,459 posts)I remember wearing a sweater to the first H.S home game. However, tonight there are no sweaters in sight...t-shirts and shorts for at least the next week and beyond.
Our wedding anniversary is tomorrow, and 17 years ago I wore a long laced-sleeve dress, with petticoats, and thigh-high stockings. My husband wore a morning suit with a tailed jacket, vest and tie. The wedding was at 1:00, and we had a steamy 2 hour downpour before. Yet neither of us broke a sweat. We took a nice 3 week car trip to New England for our honeymoon, and the weather was pleasant and seasonal...crisp, cool, sunny autumn days, just as we wanted.
