Not exactly the same situation as the OP's, but sort of analogous.

When I used to make sales calls as part of a prior job, I got to know a lot of customers well over the phone. When I met them in person, they often looked nothing like I pictured. There was one woman in particular that I loved talking to, I pictured her as a very beautiful blond, just on how her voice sounded and how she talked. Well, I hate to sound uber-shallow here, but she was a thin, mousey red head with bad skin and an overbite that was never corrected. Yikes. Kinda shot that fantasy to hell.
