(1 post)I apologize to anyone for bumping this thread as it may be against forum etiquette but under these circumstances I felt it must be done.
mikeytherat it appears you haven't been active for some time, but I wanted to make an account just to send you a message of thanks. Unfortunately there are restrictions on PM's until you have had a number of posts, so I cannot send you a message directly. I figured replying to your last post was the next best thing.
I wanted to thank you for an obscure little post you made years ago. For over a decade I have been tormented by a song. A song with a distinct baseline and even more pronounced horn refrain. I could hear them clearly in my head, but no matter how I tried I couldn't place it. I've summoned what paltry musical talent I've had and tried to make my own embarrassing sung renditions to friends, family, coworkers. To much relief and frustration, many acknowledged hearing the song at some point, but had no clue what it might be.
Describing with text was useless, consulting with friends of friends who were allegedly well versed in music from the period turned up nothing, even numerous attempts to get Midomi to turn up something were fruitless.
Today I am home sick from work, the song popped into my head, and in an effort to entertain myself I once again put my googling skills to work to try and get some kind of relevant leads. I ended up finding a thread on this forum's predecessor, a thread from nearly 5 years ago that has since been archived, a thread made by someone describing a song with several characteristics similar to mine. I clicked diligently on all the video links of songs suggested by users. A few speed bumps were there, most had been taken down due to copyright claims years ago. I kept at it, I clicked on yet another link, not realizing, this would be the last in my years of occasional extemporaneous searching.
The video started to play. An old black and orange 7" Atlantic record. The anonymous MC dropped the needle and all I heard was Mary had a Little Lamb. Another failure. My cursor started on a journey it has made hundreds of thousands of times, toward the back button. I was too slow.
What I felt next was a frozen stupor of disbelief, anxiety, and elation all rolled into one. From out of nowhere that bass line seemed to infiltrate my ears and detonate deep in my skull from a countlessly repeated and never satiated wanting memory of a song heard long ago. A part of me, perhaps still suspicious, bid me to sit almost unthinking and unmoving until sure enough, exactly how I had remembered it from a time I cannot even recall, the trumpets sounded.
I felt myself release a pensive breath when I looked at the title. Soul Finger. Soul Finger by the Bar-Kays. At long last, I was reunited, and with a name to boot.
I don't know what song the OP was after, but it hardly matters. Your shrugging emoticon can finally rest easy. That was my song.
