and when I say "a bit" I mean enough for them to be set for life, but not millions....

and my husband and I would say "hasta la pasta" and head for parts unknown...forever....

best trip ever was to Thailand in 2009. Holy moly, what a mindfuck. Came back and realized that, as nurses, my husband and I could work for approximately 3 months in the US and live for the remaining 9 months in Thailand. Live very nicely. Nicer than we live in the US

I live quite comfortably on less then 14k a year now so that amount would allow me to travel if I desired to. There are a number of charities and non profit organizations in the local area that I could donate anonymously to on an annual basis.

As for what I'd do:

-I'd pay off my mom's house and her car (which actually wouldn't be that much)
-Pay off my current house and buy a larger one, then rent out the smaller one we live in
-Buy a house in Portland and San Francisco so that when we visit the US we have a place to stay (I know I'm starting to sound like Mitt Romney)
-Buy a new car, send my wife to driver's school and give her my car so she can drive (between the houses and the cars I've probably just tripled how much tax I'll pay as they hit you hard for car tax here, not so much for property tax unless you own a second home).
-Next year when I go to visit the US I'd fly 1st class for the first time

After that I'd invest in something stable for retirement.

here people have to put down a hunk of money as a deposit. In the US it's usually first, last, and a deposit. The deposits here start at $10-15,000 for monthly rent and $75,000 up for a lease with no monthly rent. It's much harder to screw a landlord here than in the US (or maybe Canada assuming they have the same system). The other possibility would be to let my in-laws live in the 2nd house free until they pass. My FIL can't own anything due to his cosigning on a bad loan years ago (that was one of his brother-in-law who is a major dick from what my wife tells me).

Only got one neighbour within a mile - buy him out first.

Then buy out the other half-dozen within the next mile.

Build on the river that cuts across the road I drive to get to where I live, with a deck overhanging the river -

catch dinner right off my deck.

No interest in traveling - figure that I'll never discover all on the 28 acres I now live on.

Property was logged about 30 years ago, so there are roads and trails I have not yet explored - barely saw the signs of them in the spring when I bought the place - awaiting late fall to rediscover them as mother nature reveals them as the leaves fall.

Also, I'd go totally solar and tell hydro to get their shit off my property.

Build a large combination indoor/outdoor swimming pool with saunas and hot tub.

Have a room dedicated for pool tables.

Huge stone fireplaces,

and so on.

I lived impoverished for almost 2 decades, a recent, but fairly small inheritance allowed me to buy a modest home outright.

I have lived in and around this small town of 2,000 for almost 30 years, retired here now.

Having needed the benefits of our local food bank for almost a decade, I remember what I missed in my diet.

Fresh meat and fresh veggies.

So, not on a regular basis, but a continuing one, I take in a cooler full of fresh meat and veggies.

I don't hang around, just give the cooler to one of the workers,

and they drop it off at a local gas station afterwards for me to pick it up.

I intend to do this as long as my budget will allow -

and that should be for years to come unless something untoward happens.

I'll never regret doing so, however my future fortunes evolve.

The other 5 million would go into a safe account to draw interest. I would travel for the rest of my life. Maybe settle down when I feel like it and then off again when I needed adventure.
