The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI got carded again tonight...
the bartender handed back my D/L and said "Darn, Wow..well..you look really young for your age...if I'd known you were that old, I would have never asked for ID"..
I don't know whether I should be insulted or take that as a compliment...

(6,530 posts)My husband got carded routinely until about 3 years ago-- he just turned 45.
Me? No. I was the person the bartender would yell at from across the room, telling me that I couldn't bring minors into the bar with me. We are the same age.

I was 28 - 29 years old
Didn't bother me a bit - apparently the girls thought I was younger as well . . .

(24,146 posts)but my license gets a lot of scrutiny when i am. i have shoulder length hair and no glasses in my license photo, a buzz cut and black squarish glasses with rhinestones (that sounds a lot worse than it actually is ) now.

(54,281 posts)Bartenders feel, not without justification, that they are better off being overly cautious than risking losing their jobs.
Last year, my outfit had a trainee over from Bucharest. She has a law degree and a business degree. She is 28, had no idea what being carded was (first time in the USA), and was thoroughly confused by the whole procedure. Worse, yet, the only ID she had was in Romanian, and the people trying to card her had no clue how to find her birth date on her ID.

(6,795 posts)They should just stop with "you look really good for your age".
It used to bug me. Now I just laugh.
I'm 47 for cripe's sake.

(19,360 posts)But I was buying some beer at the self check the other day and the clerk had to authorize the alcohol purchase. Usually they just punch in their code and walk away but this one asked to see my ID. It's been so long since I've been carded that it took me a minute to process what she had asked. I finally obliged and afterward thanked her for making my day and we both laughed.

(11,791 posts)I'm tiny and live in a college town. I don't look 21 anymore. But I don't look 36 yet either, thank the gods. I'm a hugely vain person, I admit it.

(66,286 posts)I started to go bald at 24, so that ended any notion that I might look too young to buy alcohol...
