It gets hard when some of the words can somewhat mean like the other, or your initial meaning of the word does not show up as a choice. It slows you down.

Learning English like a second language involved reading dictionaries as a kid.

On Edit... I might know these words reading them, but pronouncing them is a whole different ballgame.

I think I got ten relatively easy words that for some reason a lot of points were applied to. I took it several times in a row and didn't get anywhere near that high again (best I got after that was 3450 and worst was 2270), but I think that had to do more with getting not enough words with high points attached since at worst I got only one wrong. A lot of words they gave really lousy definitions for.

Pretty weird test since it really all depends on whether or not you get a lot of high value rated words from the ten they give you. You can get all 10 right and do it really fast but just not get a very impressive score because the luck of the draw didn't give you hardly any or any at all high value point words. And the point values vary a LOT... 200-550 (550 was the highest I saw).

I am terrible at vocabulary and this is coming from someone who is a doctoral student. I always try to do the Word Power in the Reader's Digest if I can.

My hardest word was "Confabulate", so I think I got a relatively easy round. Maybe the six years of Latin hell I had to go through in school were good for something after all...

But, considering that English is my third language, I'll take it. I'm sure my English teacher would like to take credit for it, but I think I learned a lot more from Douglas Adams, Star Wars, the Beatles and Iron Maiden.
