but it looks like a modern-day adaptation of the short story. The original was set in the 1880's or 90's.

You might be able to find the text online. Wikisource, or someplace. It's a good read. And funny...

I think WC Fields did a short film of that. Love O.Henry's short stories. In this day of verbal diarrhea and story series that go on for volumes-he is a breath of fresh air.
