I'm a long way from Amish country but there is a thriving Amiash area in St. Petersburg, FL and I love stopping there on my way south for some pie. And all the rest of their food since I'm stopped anyway.

I wouldn't mind having a quilt too but they were getting over a thousand bucks for one of those.

we are both semi-self-sustaining(is that a word?) and raise some of our own meat and grow a large garden, etc. and the subject of Amish bread came up. He admitted to buying their bread in the past but had stopped buying it awhile ago. When I asked him why, because the price is right, it's good, and you can't make it any cheaper yourself, he told me a short story.

He had stopped to get some bread one day and asked one of the Amish children if they had any bread. The child replied that they didn't. My friend asked him why. The Amish child said "because it's bath day." He told me he never bought another loaf of bread from the Amish from that day on.

You need a pretty big pan to mix up 10 or 20 loaves of bread at a time. Let's just say the "tub" they used for their baths had a duel purpose.

Such fun to people watch there too, and an inexpensive bite of wonderful Amish baked goods or sandwiches definitely fits the budget.

They're not Dutch; they're German.

'Dutch' is a corruption of 'Deutsch' - German for 'German'.

Have a good time...

pronouncing "Deutsch" as 'Dutch' is considerably better than pronouncing it as "Douche" (I've heard that one before...)

At KKV, they have lots of taste testings. At the RR, it's really interesting and you can catch a ride to a picnic grove on a steam engine. Free wine, beer, and mead tastings at Mt Hope Winery shop. But I'd stay away from some of their organized events (ren faire, dickens xmas) -- Not a lot of bang for a hefty chunk of change.

Shady Maple is a good place to duck in. They have an awesome dime store there (Goode's Store) with lots of unique items - it's just fun to look around. They have a great grocery store filled with local baked goods and produce. If your trying to not spend a lot, do lunch at the Smorgasboard eatery in the main entry of the grocery store. You won't get quite as much variety, but it's much cheaper than going to the huge Smorgasboard across the parking lot.

Have fun! If you're there on a Friday, you can go to any number of flea markets and yard sales. We just camped up there the weekend before Halloween.

we ordered them for a bit from Kitchen Kettle Village - touristy, but quality is really good. My wife (a quilter) would head right for the quilt shops.

We used to live not far from there (West chester PA) and spent quite a few visits there....Wilbur chocolate factory in Lititz (and countless Pretzel factories) fun as well!
