Today I officially became a lazy bum.

I ordered my first automatic dishwasher. At almost 68, maybe I'm entitled. I don't make much dirt or dirty dishes even though I never use disposables - same coffee cup all day - so I'm willing to bet that Ammana ought to last me nearly the rest of my life. Run twice a week, that's barely over a hundred times a year. On sale, delivered and installed, only $380 from Home Depot. Not bad. I'm happy.

1. Good for you.

Enjoy!

I own a high-efficiency, low-noise model. Love it. Both my wife and I work long hours, so coming home and washing dishes is just not something we're really into.

a keyboard to pound. No time for dishes.

No, seriously. I never minded before, especially after hearing Gregory Hines say he insisted on his family leaving the dishes for him to wash when he was home, at least. It grounded him. I used it sort of the same way, but after moving here with such a house to restore and a huge yard to garden in - not to mention the march of time - I simply must start to be more energy efficient myself. Can't keep it up forever.

4. Awww, why did you have to go and upset my carefully arranged applecart?

I was starting to believe myself. Now I'm not so sure anymore....

What would Gregory Hines say? If dishwashing was good enough for him, it should be for me too.

I just realized something. I already ordered and paid for the dang thing. Too late now!

I live in a mobile home and there is no room for a dishwasher in the kitchen even if I could afford one. So I wash the dishes as I use them, plus I do a lot of cooking in the microwave, and I never fry foods so I do not have greasy dishes to deal with. I use a lot of aluminum foil that I can just toss into the garbage.

6. Well, nature abhors a vacuum. Any amount of space will fill itself up when you're not looking.

Recently I woke up and realized that I had enough clothes for 6 women. That's what happens when you've got plenty of storage and a nearby Clothes Closet that sells good used stuff for 10 cents apiece and looks the other way if you don't have that much. I started thinking that if I were to die, somebody would come in and find all this mess. Pray tell what does a retired person need with 48 scrub tops, no matter how much she loves them? Etc etc. So I called the radio station general store program and offered most of them for free. That's going to be my winter project - to clean this house out but good. I'll never have reason to dress up in evening clothes again, and if you came toward me with those high heels, I'd probably use them to pound nails somewhere. There's no longer any reason for half the junk I have. Let someone else enjoy it.

Except for my antique and/or rare books, I've started giving them away after reading them - no matter how much I liked them. Books aren't really alive when they're closed. I'm turning over a new personal leaf.

7. I got my first dishwasher when I was 48

Never had one growing up. Nor during poor student days. Not feasible to install in tiny kitchen in the old house. So when we finally moved here and remodelled the house I finally got one.

Weirdly though I rarely use it. Company comes over sure. And holidays but most days I handwash.

Enjoy it!
