I know I'm slightly on the younger side of the demographic curve here but I know lots of people of all ages are into video games. The average age of a gamer is something like 32 last time I checked.
What do you play if so. What are you into?
I'm mainly an RPG guy myself. As far as consoles go I'm something of a Nintendo fanboy. Nice to see a new Mario and Zelda title launching this week. Won't be buying the Xbox One or PS4 for a while as there are no good launch titles on either and no job right now. If I WERE to pick up one it would be a PS4 I think though.

(12,132 posts)and have had quite a few systems since then. In my living room now I have a WiiU, Xbox360 and PS3 but some older systems have migrated to my daughter's room. (she till plays the gamecube on occasion and has the old Xbox and a PS2 in there).
I had a pretty good PC gaming rig several years ago but haven't upgraded that in a long time. My laptop can handle the piddly squat games I play in the browser and I haven't tried any real PC games for some time. I plan to build a new one in the near future - I want to get a UHD 4K monitor and a beefy GeForce card to run it. I figure that will hold me over until 4K TV's come down some.
I wore the hell out of Skyrim. My favorite games over the last several years have been Okami, Fable, Final Fantasy and all Zelda games. I also love Mario Kart as that is about the only thing I can beat my daughter at lol.
I really enjoyed the first 2 Mass Effects but haven't played 3 and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the Infamous games.
But lately I've been spending most of my free time trying to get good at working with leather so haven't played much more than Candy Crush and Angry Birds.

(6,154 posts)Nostalgic as hell and yet one of the worst consoles ever built. Almost single handedly caused the video crash of the late 70s early 80s. Personally I grew up on the New through N64. Ahh memories. I have a small collection of vintage consoles and games that I mean to grow though collecting vintage gaming stuff is becoming expensive.
If you have a 3DS you should look at picking up the new Zelda game this Friday it's very well reviewed.
Systematic Chaos
(8,601 posts)It was 1977 technology which enjoyed a 10-year run, so of course the early games on it looked primitive. But then, so did the Magnavox Odyssey 2. That one was much worse, actually.
Rather, it was Atari's management which decided it would be a great idea to release two prototypes as finished games. Both Pac-Man and E.T. were nowhere near ready for release, but they got rushed out the door nonetheless.
If you've ever seen the Atari releases of Ms. Pac-Man and Pac-Man Jr., you'd know that the system had more than enough power to run that sort of game. It just sucks that they nearly killed the industry before learning how to do a release properly. Oh, and the homebrew version of the original Pac-Man is rather stellar also, because it was lovingly programmed by someone who wanted to duplicate the real arcade experience and not just turn a quick buck.
Locut0s
(6,154 posts)Atari did a horrible job at quality management. Tons and tons of games were released for the 2600 that were just junk, horrible, horrible junk, because they wanted to make a quick buck in what at the time was a video game super bubble. But the glut of bad games, it wasn't JUST ET and Pac-Man, that flooded the market, spelled their downfall. Atari also tried to release beefier consoles like the 5200, 7800 etc so it's not like the 2600 (which was released in 77) was the only Atari console on the market, it just proved to continue to be the most popular. Other consoles at the time also had much better hardware like the ColecoVision and the like. What it REALLY took was a shit in how games were developed. With Mario, Zelda and other RPGs on the NES people were suddenly opened to a new type of gaming that told a story with progression, adventure, discovery and development. There were a few games that tried something similar earlier but it took Nintendo to really do it right and with good quality.

(12,132 posts)but I don't play it much. She has Zelda on her list but I don't know if she plans to buy it or if she plans me to buy it for her for Christmas lol. I have a PSP and haven't used it since about 3 months after launch. It gave me cramps in my hands. I used to love playing Sonic the Hedgehog on my Sega Game Gear.
Still on the fence about getting a PSVita...haven't even looked into how it feels...

(16,184 posts)"Many hours" is such an understatement.

(6,154 posts)I don't know why. I can put hundreds of hours into old school JRPGs grinding and levelling characters but Skyrim got boring after a while even though it REALLY captivated me at first.

(10,558 posts)can be purchased from one of the gals over at Joravanskr but you have to marry her first. Its an old Nordic armor, not the most effective but looks great on the wife. Yep, I got no life but my character travels around Skyrim paired up with a scantily clad archer lass and better yet, the game has no issues with same sex marriages! When I don't need the extra weight, I leave the heavy armor at our house and we travel around Skyrim dressed alike. Btw I think that Nightengail armor you get at the end of the Thieves Guild story arc looks great too.
NuclearDem
(16,184 posts)Though I keep some Thieves Guild gloves and necklaces for when I need to do some pickpocketing or lockpicking.
Making a dagger inflict 30x damage in a sneak attack and making bows do double damage is invaluable.

(20,176 posts)mastery of lockpicking, archery, sneak, one-handed weapons (dagger dual-wield), light armor...and for some reason smithing. (I just really like smithing. I'm heavy into it on all my characters, even the mages. It's a good way to make easy money.) It's kind of become absurd...I'm lethal at 2000yds., invisible at 5', invincible at close combat and a vicious decapitation machine. I had to boost the difficulty to max to increase the number of one-hit cinematic kills I take in order to still be challenged.
I haven't started the main quest yet...that's all side questlines and dungeon-crawling. Thieves guild: done. Dark Brotherhood: done. Companions: done. Daedric quests: mostly done. Most of the radiant quests in the game are done. Now I'm onto Dawnguard.
(Long term unemployment leading to the inability to go out of weekends or pursue other recreation did this. I'm now thinking I probably should have used some of the time to learn to sew or knit or book-bind or some other crafty hobby.)

(10,558 posts)Living in Washington State was my salvation, I grew pot for a living for a lot longer than I care to admit. It paid the bills and not much else so technically I have been unemployed for the entire time. It's sorta legal now and I guess OK to be out of the closet about that. Disc Golf (Frisbee golf) is a great CHEAP source of outdoor recreation and exercise, I strongly recommend looking into it as a way to get out of the house. You will find lotsa gamers there too btw, gamers of all ages. I am almost 60 and I can guarantee you that I aint the oldest gamer out on our disc golf course.
Being at home a lot, I got into video gaming. I mastered all things HALO, which is still my fave game series but I confess to spending even more time in the Elder Scrolls series. I created countless characters in Oblivion, ran a few of them all the way up to where the game glitches out and you have to abandon them as unplayable, (I think that happens around the 500 hour mark.) You have likely seen a similar glitch in Skyrim too, after so many hours there are places you just can not go but at least you can still play them in most places which is an improvement over Oblivion.
I also max out the difficulty, had to after the first time I got bad-assed enough to take out a dragon with a single arrow dipped in poison. Like you I also like to do everything but the main quest. I generally do the main quest long enough to open up the shout ability and then I do anything other than the main quest that strikes my fancy. I early on found the gift that keeps on giving up in Dawnstar, its a buried chest that replenishes on a somewhat regular schedule so I take my young characters there straight-off. This means gold coinage is never an issue. I could not tell you how many characters I have ran through this game but more than a few. My current character hasn't tackled Dawnguard yet but her and her wife are busy hanging out on that dreary Dunmer island close to Morrowind.

(3,922 posts)She has also mastered the bow, most of the mage perks, and all of the thief perks.
And she's also the High King of Skyrim. Thank you mods!

(59,305 posts)I've put just a hair over 400 hrs into him, and he is level 163 and has mastered Locking picking, one handed, sneak, pickpocket, alchemy, blacksmithing, bow, heavy/light armor, and destruction.
I have some other perks in other area's but not many, for example I only have a few perks in Restoration so I could unlock the perk of "magic regenerates 50% faster" and there was one in Alteration where I could resist Magic for an additional 30%.
I've pretty much destroyed the game....but its fun playing. I got the Legendary edition and have exhausted those DLC's, but its fun to run around and kick ass. I'm on the hardest level setting and I still get humbled by Mage's(no matter how much I can resist their attacks, its crazy!).

(6,154 posts)It's technically part of the Mario RPG franchise but really in name only as the spirit of those games is entirely different. There is also the Mario and Luigi RPG series on the (3)DS handhelds which I quit enjoy but again they don't have the amazing feel of the original. *snif* such great memories from that game. (10,558 posts)I love RPGs, especially those made by Bethesda for X-Box. Fable and Dragon Quest were not bad either but if I had to choose one it would be Elder Scrolls Skyrim. I am also a fanatic of HALO, having mastered all but one of the games in that series on Legendary. HALO: REACH would be my favorite from that series. I would say that I average about 10 hrs a week on my X-Box. BTW, I agree with you Locut0s that there is a lack of good launch titles for the new X-Box One. I'll be waiting for something new that I want to play (HALO) to come out before investing in that gaming platform.

I will play Destiny when it comes out. It looks to be a hoot, thanks Locut0s, you rock for doing the research just now. Btw, my personal link to the name 'Destiny' is due to a music project I was honored to be a part of. Back in the late '90s we produced a CD for a local band and that CD got the band a fat gig with a guy named Joe Satriani. The band's name was Destiny and that CD is one of my more cherished personal treasures.
Here on edit is a link to the Destiny I was a part of, I was their photographer. http://julimorgan.com/the-destiny-days/ Midway down the page are three song samples. Play the first one: "Passing Over" and yeah, that young lass you see in my photos is the one you hear on guitar. She was 21 then and had only been playing guitar for 4 years when she wrote and performed that song.

(8,217 posts)I mean, I bought most of the systems.
My Genesis, SNES are still in working order.
Same goes for my PS1 and Dreamcast, though I skipped the N64
I then got an XBox and PS2, where the PS2 got a ton of use. I barely touched the Xbox. I even got to play foreign games with all these systems except the XBox.
Then, the 360 came out, which I got twice... Both times, it just failed on me, and I just gave up on the XBox altogether.
I have a PS3, which I use daily for watching Netflix. Yes, my PS3 is a glorified Netflix and VUDU device.
I haven't really played anything for a long time.
I once got in to WoW, but gave up early with the Cataclysm expansion. I haven't really touched it much after WotLK and the massive shift in skills. I played Cataclysm for about a month before completely giving up on WoW.
I haven't really touched a game much since.
I used to play the Squaresoft games, and they were events to me back then.
I do buy some fighting games. The Capcom, Namco, Team Ninja, SNK and whomever does guilty gear. I have those, in case old friends come by and we want to just hang and talk trash. So, I have become mostly a social gamer, which is very rare nowadays.

(8,492 posts)To shoot down another stereotype, I'm not ugly nor obese. I do, however, like Cheetos, but prefer Bugles. You couldn't get me to eat a Hot Pocket if you held a knife to my throat.
I've been gaming since Pong. Graduated to Nintendo when it first came out then moved up to the PS and haven't looked back. Been a PS fan ever since. The husband just bought me a PS3, so right now I only have a few games. GTA5, which I love and a few freebies that aren't bad. I'm hoping to add Silent Hill series and Assassin's Creed. Still roaming around the internet looking for others. It's been about 6 years since I've had a Playstation. Oh, and I want the rest of the Bioshock series.
However, I've been computer gaming for years. Been on WoW (on and off) for about 7, Bioshock, some other random RPGs, etc.
I'm a big supporter of studies that say gaming is good for you. Especially the ones that say it could help prevent or deter Alzheimer's, since it runs on both sides of the family.

(12,132 posts)I almost forgot that one. I finished Infinite a couple months ago - loved it. And the older ones too.
lol, I am also 49 and I remember the day our local Pizza Inn got a pong table - you could eat pizza and play pong right at your table. I fed that thing enough quarters to buy the owner a house. Maybe a small house. Between me and my friends we probably bought him a boat too.
I don't think I'll get an Xbox One or a PS4 any time soon BUT if Sony announced that they were going to make a real sequel to Okami I would buy that the day it came out and a PS4 to play it on.
Originally a PS2 title it was released for Wii as well and now looks like they upgraded the graphics to HD and released it for PS3.
Your character is the goddess Amaterasu in wolf form and your main weapon is your paint brush. One of my all time favorite games.

(8,492 posts)It looks absolutely gorgeous! I have Shadow of the Colossus, another Japanese game, but having a hard time figuring it out. The music alone put me in a trance. It's a lot different than any other games I've played. I may have to bump Okami towards the top of the list. Hearing too many good things about it.
I only have the first Bioshock on my Mac (on my third time round). Can't wait to get the rest for my PS3!
Remember the first arcades? Space Invaders, Centipede, Pac Man, etc. I'd spend hours and lots of quarters in arcades. We had a huge one not too far from where I lived that had a restaurant.

(12,132 posts)Gorgeous and insanely fun.
I remember having a big arcade at the Mall near my house - when I was in high school i worked at a shoe store at the mall and spent many break hours in the arcade. I think at first they even separated the pinball machines from the video games and you had to be 18 to play pinball but somewhere along the line that restriction got lifted.

(10,893 posts)I am a Pokemon fanatic, and have been so since 2000. I'll probably end up buying X & Y, even though I was sort of weirded out by the addition of the so-called "Fairy-type". But aside from Pokemon, I also play Mario sometimes, as well as Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Diddy Kong Racing DS, Madden, and Forza Motorsport.
I also tried getting into FPS games like Call of Duty and Halo, but those weren't my thing. There was too much button-mashing for my taste and needing to memorize how all the weapons function.

(1,893 posts)My obsession is Silent Hill. I love, love, love, love, love those games - well, the ones by the original Japanese design team, that is. I still like the others, but the originals were beyond awesome. Also Fatal Frame 1&2 - sublimely spooky and so much fun.
I'm also a big Zelda fan, and I had tons of fun playing the various God of War games, but the button mashing got to be a bit much. I wish game manufacturers would just go ahead and add a "senior" setting already, darn it. Trust me, the day will come when your reaction time slows just a hair, and you'll find yourself wishing you had a teenager on hand to get you through those tricky parts of a game.
Oh, and Resident Evil 4 - talk about fun and impossible to quit playing. I loved those spikey regenerators - scary buggers! My consoles are gathering dust now, which is sad.
